KC STREETCAR RESPONSE TO CORONAVIRUS (COVID-19)\

With heightened awareness around the Coronavirus (COVID-19), the KC Streetcar is closely monitoring the situation and will follow instructions and recommendations issued by the City of Kansas City, Missouri and the Kansas City Health Department. Currently, the public directives do not yet affect our planned KC Streetcar operating schedules and service is running as usual. We will communicate any changes in service and operations as needed.

Keeping our KC Streetcar team and passengers safe is our first priority.

As part of the daily maintenance routine, all KC Streetcars receive a thorough cleaning at the end of every day. The cleaning products the team uses are effective against numerous bacteria and viruses, including the Human Coronavirus and Influenza Type A Virus.
In addition to cleaning and disinfecting the streetcar vehicles, the KC Streetcar team performs regular cleaning of all streetcar sheltered stops and all glass and shelter frames are cleaned twice a week. The deep cleaning and power washing of all the streetcar stops are performed weekly or as needed.

As is common practice, KC Streetcar team members will immediately remove streetcars from service for cleaning if a passenger creates an unsanitary condition of any kind. If you see an unhygienic surface onboard the streetcar or at a stop, report it to the operator, safety ambassador or another KC Streetcar team member.

The following are performed daily:
1.    Clean and disinfect all seats, flip-down seats, seatbacks, handrails, grab bars, and hand straps
2.    Broom sweep and mop vehicle floors
3.    Clean and disinfect walls
4.    Clean and disinfect the articulation bellows
5.    Clean and disinfect route map signs
6.    Clean and disinfect inside door panels and manual door “open” buttons
7.    Clean and disinfect all passenger “stop” buttons
8.    Clean all interior glass windows
9.    Clean and disinfect both sides of the operator’s compartment glass doors
10.   Clean and disinfect both operator seats and all armrests
11.   Clean and disinfect the operator control panels and screens
12.   Clean interior operator windshields

In response to the current Coronavirus (COVID-19) concerns, additional precautions are being taken including:
1.    Hand sanitizer dispensers have been installed on every KC Streetcar vehicle.
2.    All streetcar doors are now automatically opened by streetcar operators unless weather or technical conditions do not allow for that.
3.    All streetcars in service are cleaned mid-day. Cleanings include wipe downs of all buttons, hand straps, handrails, and grab bars.
4.    Cleaning cloths are changed nightly.
5.    Mop water is changed multiple times per night during cleanings.
6.    On a weekly basis, all cleaning cloths and mops are changed out to new ones.
7.    All touchable surfaces inside the KC Streetcars are wiped down with disinfectant sprays that are marked effective against the Coronavirus.
8.    Air vents are cleaned regularly to remove any dirt and dust build-up.
9.    Operators have been given an increased supply of rubber gloves, hand sanitizer, and Lysol spray.
10.  Operators spray down the interior of the streetcar vehicles with Lysol spray prior to departing the Union Station streetcar stop.

For up-to-date information about the KC Streetcar's response to the Coronavirus, visit our website at www.kcstreetcar.org/clean. Also, follow the KC Streetcar on social media at Twitter (@kcstreetcar), Facebook (@kcstreetcar) and Instagram.

KC STREETCAR RESPONSE TO CORONAVIRUS (COVID-19)
Updated March 16, 2020

* As of March 16, 2020, Kansas City Mayor Quinton Lucas announced that, per CDC guidelines, there are no events or gatherings with 50 or more attendees allowed in Kansas City for the next eight weeks.  This does affect KC Streetcar ridership and we are complying with this directive.  Starting March 16, 2020, KC Streetcar ridership will be monitored to adhere to this directive and limit passengers to a total of 50 per streetcar vehicle. KC Streetcar staff and safety ambassadors will regularly enforce these new ridership directives at streetcar stops as well as make onboard announcements. This is an attempt to reduce the introduction of Covid-19 into new communities as well as to slow the spread of infection in communities.

With heightened awareness around the Coronavirus (COVID-19), the KC Streetcar is closely monitoring the situation and will follow instructions and recommendations issued by the City of Kansas City, Missouri, and the Kansas City Health Department.

The KC Streetcar does not plan to reduce service at this time. We will communicate any changes in service and operations electronically through the KC Streetcar website (www.kcstreetcar.org/clean), social media channels and the RideKC Notify text alert system (text ‘streetcar’ to 816.685.8541).

THE KC STREETCAR ADJUSTS HOURS OF OPERATION IN RESPONSE TO THE CORONAVIRUS (COVID-19)

Media Contact: Donna Mandelbaum, KC Streetcar Authority | 816.877.3219 | dmandelbaum@kcstreetcar.org

(Kansas City, Missouri) – In response to the Coronavirus (COVID-19), the KC Streetcar will temporarily operate with reduced hours, ending service at 8:00 p.m. nightly.

Starting on Friday, March 20, the KC Streetcar will run from 6:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., Mondays through Fridays, and 7:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays. The KC Streetcar will continue to operate three streetcars, seven days a week providing important access to grocery stores, critical employment centers, medical facilities, and pharmacy services.

This shift corresponds with recent changes in downtown activity levels and allows the KC Streetcar team additional time to clean all streetcar vehicles and stops as well as providing staff important time with their families.

“This schedule modification aligns our service levels appropriately while supporting Mayor Lucas’s Emergency Declaration related to the closure of restaurants, bars, and downtown activity centers,” said Tom Gerend, executive director, KC Streetcar Authority. “We are encouraging all streetcar riders to limit trips to those that are necessary and respect the social distancing guidelines put forward by the CDC,” continued Gerend.

The KC Streetcar is closely monitoring the situation and will follow instructions and recommendations issued by the City of Kansas City, Missouri and the Kansas City Health Department.  KC Streetcar operations and services will be evaluated after two weeks to allow for any adjustments if needed.  Any changes in service and operations will be communicated electronically through the KC Streetcar website (www.kcstreetcar.org/clean), social media channels and the RideKC Notify text alert system (text ‘streetcar’ to 816.685.8541)

As part of the daily maintenance routine, all KC Streetcars receive a mid-day cleaning and a thorough cleaning at the end of every day. The cleaning products the team uses are effective against numerous bacteria and viruses, including the Human Coronavirus and Influenza Type A Virus. Other proactive measures include installing hand sanitizer dispensers on every KC Streetcar vehicle, automatically opening all streetcar doors for riders, and equipping operators with gloves, hand sanitizer, Clorox wipes and Lysol, which is sprayed on board every time a streetcar arrives at the Union Station streetcar stop.

THE KC STREETCAR ADJUSTS SERVICE LEVELS IN RESPONSE TO THE CORONAVIRUS (COVID-19)

(Kansas City, Missouri) –  In response to the Coronavirus (COVID-19), the KC Streetcar will temporarily operate service with two streetcars, ending service at 8:00 p.m. nightly.

Starting on Wednesday, March 25, the KC Streetcar will operate two streetcars daily, with 15-minute frequencies, alongside the previously announced adjusted hours of operation of 6:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., Mondays through Fridays, and 7:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays. The KC Streetcar is continuing to operate seven days a week providing important access to grocery stores, essential employment centers, medical facilities, and pharmacy services.

This shift will have minimal impact on public service but does help to minimize staff and resource deployment, aligning KC Streetcar operations with the needs and conditions downtown while continuing to provide essential public transportation service.

“I am grateful to every member of our KC Streetcar team for providing crucial connections to downtown’s most essential services during this challenging time,” said Tom Gerend, executive director of the KC Streetcar Authority. “This service reduction will allow for redeployment of KC Streetcar staff to perform supplemental deep cleaning and sanitization efforts of the streetcar vehicles as we do all we can to safely serve the needs of our passengers,” continued Gerend.

The KC Streetcar is closely monitoring the situation and will follow instructions and recommendations issued by the City of Kansas City, Missouri, the Kansas City Health Department and RideKC partners.  KC Streetcar operations and services will be evaluated after two weeks to allow for any adjustments if needed.  Any changes in service and operations will be communicated electronically through the KC Streetcar website (www.kcstreetcar.org/clean), social media channels and the RideKC Notify text alert system (text ‘streetcar’ to 816.685.8541).

THE KC STREETCAR ADJUSTS HOURS AND SERVICE IN SUPPORT OF KANSAS CITY'S REOPENING

Media Contact: Donna Mandelbaum, KC Streetcar Authority | 816.877.3219 | dmandelbaum@kcstreetcar.org

(Kansas City, Missouri) – In support of Kansas City, Missouri’s gradual reopening of downtown businesses, the KC Streetcar will slowly add service and hours in a phased approach.

Subject to updates or related guidance from Kansas City, Missouri’s Health Department, and local authorities, beginning on Monday, May 18, the KC Streetcar will observe the following hours of operation and service levels. Schedule adjustments may be made during Phase I in response to observed demand and downtown activity levels.
  • Monday-Friday: 6:00 am to 9:00 pm, two streetcars all day with a third streetcar added between 10:00 am-2:00 pm.
  • Saturday: 7:00 am to 9:00 pm, two streetcars all day with a third streetcar added between 9:00 am to 6:00 pm.
  • Sunday: 7:00 am to 9:00 pm, two streetcars all day.
“We look forward to supporting Kansas City’s recovery,” said Tom Gerend, executive director of the KC Streetcar Authority. “This near-term service expansion will support businesses coming back online and provide riders more options and more space as they are making their travel choices,” continued Gerend.

Phase I carries forward all current mitigations efforts (shown below) and slightly expands the streetcar operations schedule and on-route car availability:
  • Retain COVID-19 instituted car and facility cleaning procedures, including mid-day streetcar cleaning.
  • Retain on-board and on-shelter signage related to social distancing.
  • Retain on-board hand sanitizer dispensers.
  • Retain operations policy related to auto-door opening when weather conditions permit.
  • Retain enforcement on limiting “continuous riding”.
  • Retain PPE availability for operations, maintenance, and security personal, including face masks and gloves.
  • Retain equipping staff with sanitization equipment including wipes, spray, and hand sanitizer.
  • Retain on-board seat signage, limiting seat availability.
  • Continue public messaging in a manner consistent with local government, KCMO health department directives and best practices, and regional transit partners.
A full list of mitigation efforts can be found on our website. This service expansion will support additional ridership demand and local business activity, and provide for a period of evaluation prior to the full reopening of streetcar service as downtown businesses, special events, and related ridership generators come back online. Phase I will run until May 31 at a minimum with the total length of time to be determined based on local guidelines and ridership demands. These factors will be evaluated weekly after initiation.

Phase II will be activated once downtown activity levels, ridership demand, related operating schedule refinements, and final local guidance on long-term COVID-19 responses are better known. The practices, policies, and schedule outlined in Phase II is intended to be continuous and long-term. During Phase II, the KC Streetcar will resume regular operating hours and service, including an additional streetcar in operation on First Fridays and Saturdays.

The complete KC Streetcar reactivation plan can be found on our website. The KC Streetcar is closely monitoring the situation and will follow instructions and recommendations issued by the City of Kansas City, Missouri, the Kansas City Health Department, and RideKC partners. Any changes in service and operations will be communicated electronically through the KC Streetcar website (www.kcstreetcar.org/clean), social media channels and the RideKC Notify text alert system (text ‘streetcar’ to 816.685.8541).

THE KC STREETCAR ADJUSTS HOURS OF OPERATION

(Kansas City, Missouri) – Starting March 19, 2021, the KC Streetcar will extend weekend hours to 11:00pm to better accommodate the needs of downtown Kansas City.

The new KC Streetcar hours of operation are:
  • Monday – Thursday: 6:00am – 9:00pm
  • Friday: 6:00am – 11:00pm
  • Saturday: 7:00am – 11:00pm
  • Sunday: 7:00am – 9:00pm

9e79f080-f5a1-4d18-94cd-a806aa49c2f5.jpgThe extension of hours is in direct response to the activity levels downtown, improving weather, the decrease in Covid-19 positive case numbers, and the increased access to the Covid-19 vaccine. Any changes in service and operations will be communicated electronically through the KC Streetcar website (www.kcstreetcar.org/clean), social media channels and the RideKC Notify text alert system (text ‘streetcar’ to 816.685.8541).

“This initial service increase is an important first step as we respond to a recent growth in ridership demand and we will continue to work together with our downtown partners to support the reemergence of resident, business, and visitor activity downtown,” said Tom Gerend, Executive Director, KC Streetcar Authority.

In March 2020, the KC Streetcar adjusted hours of operation in response to the Covid-19 pandemic but continued to operate seven days a week providing important access for downtown residents, workers, and visitors.

While the weekend hours are extended, the KC Streetcar’s Covid-19 mitigation efforts are still in effect. Those efforts include:
  • Mid-day cleaning and end-of-day cleaning of all streetcars on a daily basis.
  • Requirement of face masks when riding the streetcar and at streetcar stops. If a passenger does not have a face mask, we will provide one for free at our Union Station stop.
  • Hand sanitizer dispensers on board all streetcars.
  • Social distancing encouraged when riding the streetcar.
  • Automatically opening all streetcar doors for riders.
  • Equipping operators with gloves, hand sanitizer, Clorox wipes and Lysol, which is sprayed onboard every time a streetcar arrives at the Union Station streetcar stop.
MEDIA: Please contact Donna Mandelbaum with the KC Streetcar Authority at 816.877.3219 (cell) or email at dmandelbaum@kcstreetcar.org. The KC Streetcar is online at www.kcstreetcar.org and on Twitter (@kcstreetcar), Facebook (@kcstreetcar) and Instagram.

KC STREETCAR IMPLEMENTS PHASE 2 OF COVID-19 REACTIVATION PLAN

(Kansas City, Missouri) – As of April 30, 2021, the KC Streetcar Authority activated Phase 2 of their Covid-19 Reactivation Plan. This is in support of the growing downtown Kansas City activity levels, ridership demand, and updated local guidance from the City of Kansas City, Missouri, on Covid-19 regulations.

“We are thrilled to help support downtown’s recovery through expanded KC Streetcar operating hours and on-board capacity. It’s been a long year for all of us but all signs point to a reenergized summer in Kansas City,” said Tom Gerend, Executive Director, KC Streetcar Authority.

9e79f080-f5a1-4d18-94cd-a806aa49c2f5.jpgPhase 2 of the KC Streetcar Covid-19 Reactivation plan retains many of the mitigations already in place such as requiring face masks while on-board the streetcars, thorough daily cleanings of all streetcars, and the availability of on-board hand sanitizer dispensers. However, on-board social distancing requirements and the auto open-door policy have been discontinued. Click here for a full list and description of the KC Streetcar Phase 2 Covid-19 Reactivation Plan. The practices, policies, and schedule outlined in Phase 2 are intended to be continuous and long-term, pending future changes from healthcare professionals or local authorities.

Additionally, starting May 24, 2021, the KC Streetcar will extend hours to better accommodate the needs of downtown Kansas City:
  • Monday – Thursday: 6:00am – 10:00pm
  • Friday: 6:00am – 12:00am
  • Saturday: 7:00am – 12:00am
  • Sunday: 7:00am – 10:00pm
The extension of hours is in direct response to the activity levels downtown, improving weather, the decrease in Covid-19 positive case numbers, and the increased access to the Covid-19 vaccine. Any changes in service and operations will be communicated electronically through the KC Streetcar website (www.kcstreetcar.org), social media channels and the RideKC Notify text alert system (text ‘streetcar’ to 816.685.8541).
