MTBA Reduced Commuter Rail Fares Take Effect July 1

The MBTA is reminding riders that several fare changes on the Commuter Rail, ferry, buses and more go into effect on July 1.

The MBTA is such a train wreck lately that this publication cannot spell MBTA properly in its headline.   Story here.

MBTA won’t roll out $935M automated fare payment system in 2024

The MBTA does not expect to fully implement its nearly $1 billion automated fare collection system in 2024, as previously planned, effectively pushing back a project that was already three years behind schedule.

This project, when completed, will replace the 2006 CharlieCard system with a modernized contactless payment approach, allowing riders to tap or board at any door with a fare card, smartphone or credit card, with an additional aim of cutting down on fare evasion.

The T’s ‘Fare Transformation’ Project Is Transforming Into A Boondoggle

Since 2018, the MBTA has been under contract to replace the CharlieCard and introduce a new fare payment system for the region's transit systems.

But the project is far behind schedule, in spite of a 30 percent budget increase that MBTA officials approved in 2020.

Now, as the T struggles with a severe shortage of workers and serious safety issues, advocates and even some high-ranking T officials are raising questions about whether a new fare system is really worth all the money and the effort it would require.

MBTA updating system so riders can pay with tap of phone or credit card

BOSTON - The MBTA says it hopes to begin rolling out a new contactless payment system this summer that allows bus and subway passengers in Boston to just tap their phone or credit card to pay for rides.

The system is already being used in New York City, London, and Chicago. The MBTA hinted that it was developing the contactless system to WBZ-TV back in November.

The MBTA said it plans to allow contactless payment on Commuter Rail and ferries starting in 2026.
