MARC Service Alert

MARC Train reminder - MONDAY (not Tuesday) afternoon service

MARC Train continues to operate the Enhanced R schedule due to the winter storm. The following are updates for this afternoon's service.

Penn Line - The following trains will be cancelled: Train 634 (4:45pm departure from Washington), Train 440 (5:30pm departure) and Train 642 (5:58pm departure). All other R and R+ trains will operate and Train 438 (5:20pm departure) will add stops at Seabrook and Bowie State. As a reminder, Trains 428 and 438 operate through to Perryville on the R schedule.

Camden and Brunswick Lines - All Enhanced R/R+ trains will operate.

All trains may experience delays due to the weather. Further updates on service will be provided as conditions warrant.

If you are riding MARC today, please follow our guidelines for winter weather travel:

--Take your time WALKING from the train platform to your vehicle and exercise caution when driving. Roads and parking lots are slick.

--We strongly encourage passengers to wear shoes appropriate for winter weather. Dress shoes and heels are strongly discouraged.

--MARC Facilities staff will be out treating platforms and parking lots, but some spots may be slippery. WALK slowly and take your time.

--When boarding your train, use handrails to walk through wet or slushy areas. Floors can be slippery.

MARC Train - Will operate Enhanced R schedule tomorrow (Tuesday)

MARC Train will operate Penn, Camden and Brunswick Line service on the Enhanced R (or R+) schedule on Tuesday, January 4 due to the ongoing effects from today's winter storm. Only trains with an R or R+ under the train number in the Penn and Camden Line timetable and trains in the R/R+ schedule grid on the right side of the Brunswick Line timetable will operate.

If you ride MARC tomorrow, please follow our guidelines for winter weather travel:

--Allow ample time to drive to the station, park your car, and WALK to the train platform. There will be significant re-freezing overnight tonight.

--We strongly encourage passengers to wear shoes appropriate for winter weather. Dress shoes and heels are discouraged.

Last Night’s Service and Today’s Service Cancellation:

Due to multiple issues brought on by severe weather throughout the service area our afternoon service experienced a serious disruption. Prior to our midday trains (Fredericksburg Line 301 scheduled to depart Union Station at 1:00 PM, and Manassas Line 325 scheduled to depart Union Station at 1:15 PM) our host railroads began to experience problems which affected the ability for trains to proceed. As we prepared for 301 and 325 for service, VRE was informed CSX had closed the railroad south of Alexandria due to trees across the tracks and other weather-related issues.

Eventually we did obtain permission to run the Manassas Line trains. It was at this time we experienced weather induced switch and signal failures in the storage yard and Union Station Terminal. Due to the estimated time to get the route set it was determined 325 would not make it out prior to the next train’s departure time (329) so the decision was made to cancel 325.

As the afternoon progressed, the switch and signal issues in the yard persisted and trees continued to fall across the tracks south of Alexandria as quickly as they could be removed. The Manassas Line trains were able to operate but were severely delayed. We were then informed by CSX we would not be able to operate the Fredericksburg Line trains, so at this time, the decision was made to cancel all Fredericksburg Line trains.

Though CSX crews continued working to clear the railroad it was evident the tracks would not be cleared in time to provide reliable service today. This in combination with limited support staff to prepare all trains for service this morning it was decided to cancel service. This also allowed CSX crews time to work through the night and into today clearing the railroad, which as of late this morning is still not open.

We apologize for the inconvenience caused by these delays and cancellations. Thank you for your patience and understanding.

VRE Service Tomorrow, January 5th:

Any modifications to service for tomorrow, January 5th, will be made as soon as it can be determined. Our ability to operate a full schedule is dependent upon progress being made by CSX crews to clear the railroad of trees as well as improvement in conditions on roadways so that our support staff and crews are able to get to the yard facilities to prepare the trains for morning service.

Any changes to planned service will be relayed as soon as possible, no later than 4 AM tomorrow morning.
