NY MTA news release 4/30/20

MTA Announces Overnight Closure of Subway for Deep Cleaning, Launches “Essential Connector” for Heroic Frontline Workers During Ongoing Covid-19 Pandemic

MTA to Close Subway From 1 – 5 a.m. Beginning May 6 to Deep Clean & Disinfect Every Train & Bus Every Night & Further Test Innovative Cleaning Solutions

MTA to Launch “Essential Connector” Service to Continue Moving Heroic Frontline Workers; LIRR, Metro-North, New York City Transit and MTA Bus Service Continue Under MTA Essential Service Plan with Enhancements Along High Ridership Routes

New York City Has Agreed to Deploy Additional NYPD to Ensure Safety and Security of System Overnight

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) today announced the closure of the subway system overnight from 1 – 5 a.m. for daily deep cleaning and a new “Essential Connector” service to continue moving the heroes on the frontlines of the COVID-19 pandemic beginning Wednesday, May 6.  During this overnight period, the MTA will intensify disinfecting operations, cleaning its fleet of thousands of cars and buses every night, and further testing new and innovative cleaning solutions, including UV, antimicrobials and electrostatic disinfectants. Essential workers traveling to and from work during the overnight will be connected with for-hire-vehicles through the “Essential Connector” program at no cost to customers. New York City Transit and MTA bus service will continue to run under the MTA Essential Service Plan with enhancements along high ridership routes.

The closure of the system during the overnight period of 1-5:00 a.m. will require significant and sustained NYPD resources. All customers will be required to leave the trains and the stations during this time.  The City has agreed to bolster its presence systemwide and deploy additional NYPD resources as the safety and security of the system is paramount during this period.

MTA Chairman and CEO Pat Foye said, “This is an unprecedented time and that calls for unprecedented action to protect the safety, security and health of our system for customers and employees. This closure will enable us to more aggressively and efficiently disinfect and clean our trains and buses than we have ever done before and do it every single day. We are pleased the City has agreed to deploy significant additional resources to the system at this critical time in our history.”

Sarah Feinberg, Interim President of New York City Transit, said: “We need to do everything we can to ensure our system is a clean, disinfected and as safe as possible –  and we have to get it right. Closing our system for a limited time overnight will enable us to clean and disinfect every car, every night. We also want to make sure we find a way to do this as efficiently and in as innovative a way as possible to ensure we are maximizing safety of our riders. We need to do this while we continue moving the heroes on the frontlines of this crisis – the doctors, nurses, grocery workers, utility employees and childcare workers. Our new ‘Essential Connector’ service will do just that – providing dedicated service along subway routes overnight and getting our heroes to and from work to save lives.”

During the COVID-19 crisis, ridership on the New York City subway has fallen more than 90 percent. In recent weeks, the MTA has undertaken a line-by-line analysis of ridership data during the overnight period from 1-5:00 a.m. On average, approximately 11,000 customers currently use the subway during this time. Approximately 1,802 customers use the subway between the hours of 1-2:00 a.m., 1,386 customers between 2-3:00 a.m., 2,129 between the hours of 3-4:00 a.m., and 5,692 between 4-5:00 a.m.

Beginning next week, the MTA will launch the “Essential Connector” service between 1-5 a.m. at no cost to essential workers traveling to and from work during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic across the five boroughs. The “Essential Connector” will ensure efficient travel for health care workers, first responders and other essential personnel, including to and from hospitals and other health care services, grocery stores, pharmacies, convenience stores and other essential services.

“Essential Connector” customers will be limited to two trips per night on for-hire-vehicles and must show proof of essential travel with appropriate credentials. Customers who do not have a smart phone will also be able to request a ride through a dedicated number. Rides will also be available to customers requiring wheelchair accessible vehicles. Additional details on the “Essential Connector” will be released shortly.

Bus service will continue to run 24/7 under the MTA Essential Service Plan. Where there are large pockets of riders, additional bus service will be added as necessary. More details on the MTA Essential Service Plan are available here.

The Long Island Rail Road and Metro-North Railroad will also begin disinfecting trains daily with service under the MTA Essential Service Plan.

The MTA will resume overnight service between the period of 1-5 a.m. when customer demand returns, and innovative and efficient disinfecting techniques have been successfully deployed systemwide.

Gov. Cuomo announces the end of overnight subway service for now as cleanliness, homelessness concerns emerge

For the first time its in 116-year history, the New York City subways will no longer have planned 24/7 service as Gov. Andrew Cuomo and his MTA announced on Thursday that, beginning next Wednesday, trains will not run between 1 a.m. – 5 a.m. Overnight subway service — a New York City hallmark — will be suspended for the foreseeable future, and the MTA will continue to offer bus service or subsidize for-hire vehicle use for the 11,000 essential employees who now find themselves without late-night train service.

Face Masks and Crowd Control:  The Race to Make Your Subway Ride Safer

Businesses in New York City will be asked to change workers’ schedules to reduce rush-hour density on the subway. A new squad of guards will patrol stations, reporting overcrowding to supervisors and directing riders to emptier train cars. Brightly colored markers will be added to encourage riders to keep a distance from one another on platforms, following the advice of transit agencies in China, Singapore and Britain.

Buses, UV Lights, And Lots Of Cops: How The MTA Will Shut Down Subway Service Overnight

As the MTA prepares to shut down the entire subway system every night from 1 a.m. to 5 a.m. to begin an intensive cleaning regimen, the agency is relying on some new technologies to rid the trains of the virus, while deploying more buses to get essential workers where they need to go.

Roughly 11,000 New Yorkers currently rely on overnight service, and the MTA is adding 344 more buses to run 1,168 more bus trips a night.  .  .  .

The MTA says the shutdown, which will begin early Wednesday morning, is about cleaning train cars and stations in “aggressive” ways that aren't possible if trains are still running and if the homeless are allowed to stay in the system. While daytime cleaning and overnight yard cleaning will be more “comprehensive” than it has been, every single train will also be cleaned in terminals overnight. In other countries, like South Korea, for example, trains are now cleaned 14 times a day. (Though Seoul does not have 24 hour service.)

The agency will also use this time to test multiple virus killing technologies from various companies, which includes UV lights and antimicrobial products that are applied to surfaces after they’ve been disinfected.

As for how the MTA will close its 472 stations, Chief Safety Officer Pat Warren said some have gates that will be locked, while others will have a police officer stationed outside to keep people out.

“The police presence in the subways during the period from 1 a.m. to 5 a.m. is going to be at an unprecedented level,” Chairman Foye said. “Both NYPD and MTA police.”

CNN 5/6/20

For the first time in its history, New York City deliberately shut down its entire subway system this morning

(CNN)  For the first time in its 115-year history, New York City deliberately shut down its entire subway system Wednesday morning.

The reason: The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) deep-cleaned to prevent spread of the coronavirus.

"Extraordinary times call for extraordinary measures," MTA Chairman Patrick Foye said late Tuesday.

The New York City subway has been shut down because of weather: Hurricane Irene in 2011 and Hurricane Sandy in 2012. During the blizzard of 2015, the system canceled passenger service, but equipment trains kept running.

But this is the first planned shutdown.

The cleanings will be done on a nightly basis, from 1 a.m. to 5 a.m. When the cleaning is done, every single subway car will be disinfected.

Homeless Booted Out Of Subway Stations During Cold Snap Offered "Warming" Buses By MTA

Homeless advocates are blasting the decision by the MTA to use stationary buses to house the street homeless who were booted from the subway as temperatures plunged into the mid-30s Friday night with a record snowfall.

The weather combined with the overnight closure of New York City’s subway trains and stations meant the street homeless population faced even greater risks during the coronavirus pandemic, which prompted the closure.

The city offered some warming buses parked outside of end-of-line stations as “a place for individuals to escape the elements in the short term,” said NYC Transit interim president Sarah Feinberg and TWU Local 100 president Tony Utano in a joint statement Friday. The stationary bus service will also be available Sunday.

2019 Ridership and the 2020 Projections: What the subways lost and when it will all come back

Very quietly last month, the MTA released their 2019 ridership tallies, and last year was a good year for the subways. After three years of declining ridership, annual subway ridership hit 1,697,787,002, a jump of nearly 18 million or a hair over 1 percent above 2018’s total. Usually, the MTA would celebrate increased ridership and increased fare revenue, but with things being as they are right now, the release of these numbers was a muted one.

The MTA developed an app to help essential workers get around during nightly subway closures

Essential Connector was developed by Swiss company Axon Vibe

New York City’s subway system has a new app to help essential workers get around during nightly subway closures.

Earlier this month, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority, the nation’s largest subway system and the only one in the US to run 24/7, announced that it would be shutting down between 1AM and 5AM to disinfect the trains and address the growing population of homeless people in the system.  .  .  .   During the shutdown, the state will provide alternative travel for essential employees who need to get to and from work during those hours.

Since the subway began its nightly shutdown, the MTA has been directing essential workers to its website to find enhanced bus schedules or to book a free car service trip. Now, the agency is rolling out a new app it says can make the task of finding late-night transportation a little easier.
