NJ Transit lost a long-time rail employee and a bus driver to complications from COVID-19, even as officials said the number of positive cases has significantly declined among its workers.

What a fantastic idea: A mask car on NJ Transit | Editorial

Much like the “quiet car” that’s already designated on the train, where you can’t blabber away on your cell phone, having a “mask car” would be about providing passengers a more comfortable environment.

 

It’s a terrific idea, suggested again recently by a commuter advocate, now that there’s no more national covid mask mandate. Yes, we’re all tired of masks, but an AP poll released last week found that 56% of Americans favor a mandate for public transportation, while only 24% are opposed.

And in this case, all we’re talking about is just one designated mask car. So why won’t NJ Transit get on board?

 

 

This is even more important than the quiet car, because it’s a safety issue.  . . .

Remember at one point during the pandemic, the South Shore Line in Indiana had a "maskless" car, the opposite, until the federal travel mask mandate stopped that practice.

    Offer "Mask Cars" on NJ Transit Trains  

 

 

We ask NJ Transit to designate at least one car on each train as a "mask car," so as to maximize safety and comfort for those riders who wish to wear a mask in the presence of other riders who will also be masked at all times. Riders who do not wish to wear a mask could ride any of the other cars on board.

     NJ Transit knocks rider idea to designate mask-only cars on trains  

 

 

As cold and flu season approaches, riders who’ve lobbied NJ Transit to test designating one car per train as a spot that requires riders to wear masks saw their efforts derailed Monday.
