NS Intermodal Shipper Alert, 1/26:

Winter Storm Juno

Jan 26, 2015

Winter Storm Juno is expected to impact the New York & New Jersey region today Monday January 26th, 2015 with 18  – 24 inches of snow and high wind gusts.  Norfolk Southern has been advised that the marine terminals at Elizabeth Marine (EMT) and New York Container (NYCT) will be closing tonight and may not reopen until Thursday January 29th.

Due to the marine terminal closures and the expected effects of the storm, we will be closing the ingatesat several intermodal facilities to traffic bound for NY/NJ as noted below.

Traffic destined to:

EMT/NYCT – we will close the ingates tonight at Landers (10:00pm CST), Cleveland (6:00pm EST), St Louis (5:00pm CST), and Kansas City (5:00pm CST).

Croxton/Erail – we will close the ingates tonight at Atlanta and Chicago 63rd St at 8:00pm EST.

In addition to these ingate closures, the Erail Intermodal Facility will be closing at 5:00pm tonight.

Once the storm passes, we will re-evaluate the ingate and terminal closures, and provide an updated plan to restart operations to these facilities.

Ayer, MA Embargo Due to Winter Storm Juno

Jan 26, 2015

Winter Storm Juno is expected to impact the New England region late Monday January 26th, 2015 with 20 – 30 inches of snow and high wind gusts.  Conditions are expected to deteriorate quickly once the snowfall begins which will prevent most road travel, as well as our ability to safely operate at the Ayer Intermodal Facility.

As a result of the storm forecast, we will initiate an embargo for all traffic destined to Ayer, MA beginning at 11:00pm EST tonight Monday January 26th.  In conjunction with the embargo, we will close the ingates at the Chicago 47th St and Toledo Intermodal Facilities to all traffic destined to Ayer, effective at 10:00pm CST (11:00pm EST) tonight.

We are experiencing high inventory levels at the Ayer facility this morning.  Customers are strongly encouraged to pull loads early in advance of the storm.  We will be closing the Ayer Intermodal Facility at 7:00pm EST tonight so that all personnel can safely return home.

Once the full effects of Winter Storm Juno have subsided and the facility personnel are able return to work, we will provide an update related to the embargo and gate closures.

Winter Storm Juno Update

Jan 27, 2015

Winter Storm Juno was less impactful than expected in the New York & New Jersey region.  Based on the improving weather conditions, Norfolk Southern will reopen the Erail Intermodal Facility, as well as all of the ingates for traffic destined to Erail, Croxton, Elizabeth Marine Terminal, and New York Container Terminal effective at 12:00 Noon EST today, January 27th, 2015.

The previously announced embargo and related gate closures for all traffic destined to Ayer is still in effect, and the Ayer Intermodal Facility remains closed.  The New England area received heavy snowfall, and operations on the PanAm RR have been curtailed.  Once train and facility operations have been restored, we will provide an updated re-opening plan for Ayer.

Ayer, MA Embargo Update

Jan 28, 2015

Winter Storm Juno dropped more than 30” of snow in the Ayer, MA area.  Since the driving ban was lifted, the Ayer Intermodal Facility operator was able to staff their operations personnel this morning.  Snow removal efforts are underway and we are beginning to ground traffic from the last inbound train that arrived prior to the facility closure.  However, the terminal is congested, so all operations are slow.

In an effort to speed up the recovery, we will open the Ayer Intermodal Facility outgate only, effective immediately, so that customers can pick-up their loads.

Due to the current traffic backlog, the ingate at Ayer is still closed, and the embargo for all traffic destined to Ayer remains in effect.

We will continue to monitor the facility progress as well as the recovery efforts of the PanAm RR, and provide further updates at the appropriate time.

Ayer, MA Embargo Update

Jan 29, 2015

The PanAm RR continues making progress restoring operations on their mainline after Winter Storm Juno.  Trains are operating at reduced speeds, and train crews are becoming available.

Based on PanAm’s progress, we will reopen the ingate at the Ayer Intermodal Facility for loaded traffic only at 4:00pm today.  The Ayer facility outgate was reopened Tuesday.  Due to facility congestion, we will not accept the return any empty EMP containers at this time.

Because of the backlog of traffic still enroute to Ayer, the embargo for all traffic destined to Ayer remains in effect.

We appreciate our customers patience as we work through the after-effects of the storm and will provide further updates as appropriate.

Ayer, MA Embargo Removed

Jan 31, 2015

We have successfully worked through the backlog of traffic destined to Ayer that was delayed due to Winter Storm Juno.  Though another round of storms are forecast to impact Chicago, the Upper Midwest, and New England beginning tonight, Norfolk Southern will remove the embargo for traffic destined to Ayer effective at 10:00pm tonight, Saturday January 31st, 2015.

Due to continuing congestion at the Ayer Intermodal Facility, we are still not able to accept the return of empty EMP containers.  We will lift the empty EMP restriction as soon as the facility inventory is reduced to acceptable levels.  REZ-1 has been advised to make the appropriate per diem adjustments for customers.
