Surprising to realize that this topic has been dormant for just about 1 year; I thought the discussion continued in the Buffalo area about what to do about their station situation.  From WBFO Radio, 4/16/18:

Is the Central Terminal out of the running for a new Amtrak station?

Plans for a new Amtrak station, in downtown Buffalo, are moving forward. The state is planning to start work on the $25 million project this fall. But, Congressman Brian Higgins is not giving up on locating the new station in the historic Central Terminal.

Another column, promoting not only using Buffalo's old Central Terminal as the only Buffalo station, but also extending the Metrorail light rail to the same facility. As a package, it sounds like a good idea.  And extending it even further to the Buffalo Niagara Airport makes even better sense since there would be a lot more flights at the airport than trains at the train station.

Column in Buffalo, NY News, 4/22/18:

Proposed train station is not multimodal

As unveiled earlier this week, the DOT's plans for rebuilding Buffalo's downtown Amtrak station pay only lip service to the widely stated goal of providing seamless connectivity between modes of transportation. It's not true that the proposed Exchange Street station is "directly connected" to the Metro Rail.

Column here.   Of interest near the end is something I hadn't heard, if true ---- that GO Transit is considering extending beyond Niagara Falls, ON to Niagara Falls, NY and even possibly Buffalo.  New concept, an international border crossing of a commuter rail line... although the border facilities that currently serve Amtrak and VIA Rail passengers on the Maple Leaf are already in place.

As time has passed since previous news, it now appears that the current Exchange Street Station will be demolished and rebuilt onsite as a major transportation hub, which may or may not mean that re-use of Central Terminal is a moot point.  From WIVB-TV, Channel 4 in Buffalo, NY, 12/5/18:

NYSDOT awards $27.7 million contract to tear down existing Amtrak station, build transportation hub

The New York State Department of Transportation has awarded a $27.7 million contract for a new intermodal transportation hub in downtown Buffalo.

This thread shows the debate over almost four years about a new station for Amtrak in Buffalo. Construction will begin this summer at the current location.
