AP via WTOP radio, 4/14:

Engineering study set for Susquehanna River Bridge

HAVRE DE GRACE, Md. (AP) -- Amtrak says it has joined with state and federal agencies to conduct an engineering study of the Susquehanna River Rail Bridge for possible rehabilitation or replacement.

The railroad said in a news release Monday that the Maryland Department of Transportation and the Federal Railroad Administration have launched the study of the 108-year-old bridge. Amtrak owns the bridge.

Railway Track and Structures, 4/14:

Amtrak, Maryland DOT, FRA partner on Susquehanna River Bridge study

Amtrak, in conjunction with the Maryland Department of Transportation (MDOT) and Federal Railroad Administration (FRA), has launched a preliminary engineering study for rehabilitation or possible replacement of the 108-year-old Susquehanna River Rail Bridge.

The study will comply with the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) and examine various alternatives, while considering environmental and historical impacts to the community.

The existing two-track bridge, which is owned by Amtrak, is a crucial link along the busy Northeast Corridor (NEC), but is nearing the end of its useful life. Along with Amtrak and Maryland's MARC Commuter Rail passenger trains, this section of the NEC is used by Norfolk Southern to carry freight across the Susquehanna River.

The Sun, 4/16:

Amtrak continues to study Susquehanna River bridge's future
No plan yet on replacement or reconstruction; public meeting set for April 28 in Havre de Grace

Officials with Amtrak are seeking the public's input as they begin a three-year study regarding the refurbishment – or replacement – of their 108-year-old railroad bridge across the Susquehanna River between Harford and Cecil counties.

Planing for the project will take at least three more years, the railroad says, so no final decisions have been made about future construction.

Planners have developed alternatives such as a four-track structure with reconstructed approaches on both sides of the river. Officials are also weighing improvements to the "navigation channel" under the bridge for boats, according to a statement from Amtrak.

A public information meeting will held from 5 to 8 p.m. on Monday, April 28, at the Havre de Grace Activity Center, 351 Lewis Lane, at where some of the alternatives under consideration will be discussed.

Amtrak shows two potential routes, updated designs for new Susquehanna River rail bridge

Amtrak officials have narrowed to two the number of prospective routes for the rail line serving the proposed replacement for the Susquehanna River Rail Bridge, although the property line for one route would overlap a portion of the running track at Havre de Grace High School's James R. Harris Stadium.

For faster train travel, Amtrak wants to fix railway bottlenecks in Maryland
As Amtrak trains whisk passengers hundreds of miles along the East Coast between Boston and Washington, they're forced to slow down at four pinch points in Maryland, where ancient railroad infrastructure can't accommodate the high speeds and capacity of modern train technology.

http://www.baltimore...0502-story.html

If a developer's vision of a separate, magnetic levitation train between Baltimore and Washington, supported by Gov. Larry Hogan, becomes a reality, Epple wrote, it could poach passengers from Amtrak, leaving the tunnel to take on more freight traffic.

Lunacy!

Years ago there was an opportunity to build maglev from Pittsburgh airport through downtown to Greensburg, PA.  That made more sense as hilly topography would accommodate the mode and there would be less intrusion on private property.  A Baltimore—Washington maglev corridor would go through expensive land and would not offer an incremental speed benefit.  Sloan

New Amtrak bridge in Havre de Grace: 10 years, $1.1 billion

In about 10 years, at a cost of more than $1 billion and after one of the biggest construction projects in Harford County history, city officials say Havre de Grace will have been transformed.
