Baltimore, MD Sun editorial, 10/16/16:

Havre de Grace, Perryville communities should pay attention to Amtrak bridge project

The replacement of the bridge carrying the Amtrak rail lines over the Susquehanna River from Havre de Grace to Perryville, or Perryville to Havre de Grace, depending on your point of view, has been the subject of much conversation.

  About the Project

  c4c242bb-d499-41b2-9123-33bd0dbabf79.jpg

The existing Susquehanna River Rail Bridge is a two-track rail bridge connecting Havre de Grace, MD and Perryville, MD. This 110-year-old bridge creates a bottleneck along this segment of the Northeast Corridor, reducing the on-time performance for Amtrak’s passenger service, MARC commuter rail, and freight trains operated by Norfolk Southern. The existing bridge also causes operational inflexibility, maintenance difficulties and conflicts with maritime uses. The Maryland Department of Transportation is the project sponsor and has been working with the Federal Railroad Administration, the Maryland Transit Administration, and Amtrak to evaluate the environmental effects of the Preferred Alternative to improve this rail crossing along the heavily traveled Northeast Corridor. The project team will release the Environmental Assessment document to disclose the potential impacts of the project to the social and natural environment as required by the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) of 1969, Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA) of 1966, Section 4(f) of the USDOT Act, and other regulations.

The Aegis by The Baltimore Sun, 4/6:

Deadline approaches for comments on Susquehanna rail bridge replacement

Thursday is the final day the public can give comments on the recently-completed environmental assessment for the proposed replacement of Amtrak's Susquehanna River Rail Bridge between Havre de Grace and Perryville.

The assessment, which was presented during a public meeting March 23 at Perryville High School, covers how the replacement of a structure that is more than a century old will affect not only natural resources but transportation networks, businesses, schools, public facilities and cultural and historical resources on both sides of the river.

Continue here w/rendering of proposed bridge.

Impact (FONSI) is Available

The FONSI is a document prepared by the Federal Railroad Administration showing why the Preferred Alternative would not have a significant impact on the environment and thus would not require preparation of an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS).
