According to this Politico article:

http://www.politico....-new-ceo-113037

Amtrak CEO Wick Moorman is stepping down at the end of the year, and will be replaced by former Delta CEO Richard Anderson, according to knowledgeable sources and confirmed Monday by Amtrak.

The two men will serve as co-CEOs until the end of December.

Anderson, a 62-year-old former prosecutor from Texas, rose through the ranks of the airline industry to become CEO of Delta in 2007, just as it was leaving bankruptcy. He has a reputation as an iconoclast within the airline industry and is credited with transforming the airline into one of the world's most profitable.

So I guess with an airline guy coming in, the question might be whether there will be codeshares between Amtrak and Delta, similar to the arrangement Amtrak had with then-Continental Airlines serving cities along the east coast with trains stopping at Newark International Airport rail station.  Or, some possible cross-honoring of loyalty program points?

Amtrak news release:

Amtrak Names Transportation Veteran Richard Anderson President and CEO

June 26, 2017

WASHINGTON – Amtrak announced that it has named Richard Anderson, a 25-year veteran of the aviation industry, as its next president and chief executive officer. Anderson, former chief executive officer of both Delta and Northwest Airlines, will begin his role on July 12.

To ensure a smooth transition, Anderson will serve in a co-CEO capacity with current CEO Wick Moorman through Dec. 31, 2017, at which time Moorman will become an advisor to the company. Moorman joined Amtrak in September 2016 as a transitional CEO tasked with improving the company’s operations, streamlining the organizational structure, and helping recruit his successor.

“Richard brings to Amtrak his experience running one of the largest global commercial air carriers. The board believes he is the right leader at the right time to drive the quality of customer service that our passengers, partners and stakeholders expect and deserve while continuing our path towards operational and financial excellence,” said Amtrak Chairman of the Board Tony Coscia. “The board also appreciates all that Wick continues to do to improve Amtrak’s safety culture and strengthen our operating performance, including the important renewal work at New York Penn Station.”

Anderson, 62, most recently was executive chairman of the Delta Air Lines board of directors after serving as the airline’s CEO from 2007 to 2016. He was executive vice president at United Healthcare from 2004 to 2007 and CEO of Northwest Airlines from 2001 to 2004, which later merged with Delta. Anderson also served in the legal division at Continental Airlines and was a former county prosecutor.

“It is an honor to join Amtrak at a time when passenger rail service is growing in importance in America. I look forward to working alongside Amtrak’s dedicated employees to continue the improvements begun by Wick,” said Anderson. “Amtrak is a great company today, and I’m excited about using my experience and working with the board to make it even better. I’m passionate about building strong businesses that create the best travel experience possible for customers.”

“Richard is a best-in-class industry leader and isn’t afraid to face challenges head-on. He has helped companies navigate bankruptcy, a recession, mergers and acquisitions, and 9/11,” said Moorman. “He’s a leader with the strategic vision and tactical experience necessary to run a railroad that benefits our customers, partners and stakeholders nationwide.”

Anderson earned a Bachelor of Arts degree at the University of Houston at Clear Lake City and a Juris Doctorate at South Texas College of Law. He is a native of Galveston, TX, where his father worked for the Atchison Topeka and Santa Fe Railway.

Anderson was named Aviation Week’s Person of the Year in 2015. In 2014 he was recognized as one of the World’s Best CEOs by Barron’s magazine and was ranked among the Top 25 Most Influential Industry Executives by Business Travel News. In 2013, he was recognized in Fortune magazine’s Top People in Business list.

The New York Times, 6/26/17:

Amtrak Picks Delta’s Former Chief to Lead It Through Challenging Time

Amtrak, the national passenger railroad that has been struggling to maintain its tracks in New York City, said Monday that it had chosen an airline industry veteran to be its next chief executive.

Amtrak’s board named Richard Anderson, a former chairman and chief executive of Delta Air Lines, to succeed Charles Moorman as Amtrak’s chief this year. Until Dec. 21, the two men will serve as co-chief executives, Amtrak said.

SNIP

Mr. Anderson, 62, is scheduled to start his new job on July 12, which would be Day 3 of what Mr. Cuomo has warned could be a “summer of hell” for commuters. All three railroads that use Penn Station — Amtrak, the Long Island Rail Road and New Jersey Transit — plan to reduce their services there by as much as 25 percent to allow for track repairs.

SNIP

Mr. Moorman, who was highly compensated as chief executive of the Norfolk Southern freight railroad, had agreed to run Amtrak without taking a salary. He said Mr. Anderson had learned “how to negotiate” from him and would likewise receive just a token sum as chief executive.

Richard Anderson retired from Delta’s CEO post effective May 2, 2016, and was elevated to Executive Chairman of the Delta Air Lines Board of Directors.

Richard joined Delta’s Board of Directors in April 2007 and became CEO in September 2007. Under Richard’s leadership, Delta is strategically and creatively reengineering the airline business model and has reinvigorated a values-based culture known for high employee engagement and gracious customer service. The airline is reducing debt, strengthening revenues and thinking differently about cost control to build a flexible, stable and more durable business.

Delta continues to extend its reach for customers through partnerships such as its trans-Atlantic joint venture with Air France-KLM and Alitalia, equity based partnerships with Virgin Atlantic Airways and leading Latin American airlines GOL and Aeromexico, and preferred codeshare agreements with China Southern and China Eastern airlines, as well as the Alaska Airlines Group along the U.S. West Coast.

Delta was named the 2014 Airline of the Year by Air Transport World magazine and was named to FORTUNE magazine’s top 50 Most Admired Companies in addition to being named the most admired airline for the third time in four years.

Richard’s more than 25 years of aviation experience began in 1987 at Continental Airlines. In 1990, he began a 14-year career at Northwest Airlines where he progressed to chief executive officer, a position he held from 2001 to 2004. In September 2007, Richard joined Delta from United Health Group.

He has served as chairman of the Airlines for America Board of Directors as well as the International Air Transport Association Board of Governors. He is a director on the Boards of Medtronic, Inc. and Cargill.

Richard was named one of the World’s Best CEOs by Barron’s magazine in March 2014 and was ranked among the Top 25 Most Influential Industry Executives by Business Travel News in December 2014. In 2013, he was recognized in Fortune magazine’s Top People in Business list. He was presented the Officier De La Légion D’ Honneur in 2011 and in 2013 received Travel Weekly’s Lifetime Achievement Award.

A native of Galveston, Texas, Richard holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of Houston – Clear Lake and Juris Doctorate from South Texas College of Law.

Mr. Anderson appears to have outstanding vitae for running a large complex organization such as Amtrak.  I wish him well.  Amtrak's first president, Roger Lewis, had an airline background too.   But Lewis did not have enthusiasm for the railroad industry; consequently Amtrak hobbled along until Paul Reistrup (ex-B&O and Illinois Central).

So I hope, besides being a skilled executive with a law degree, Mr. Anderson has a passion for railroading.  History has shown that those in railroading's executive suites who succeed, are those who love enterprises of flanged wheels on rail.

"It was their (railroad executive's) love of railroading that made them decisive managers, men who knew their business so well that they had no doubt about how to make it work.  Moreover, they all lived by a code that set them apart from modern corporate standards: they all performed their jobs because they loved the business."
