Outer borough light rail with 17 stops proposed as a NYC subway alternative

While politicians and officials twiddle their thumbs and shift blame for the subway system’s current state of chaos, the Regional Planning Association (RPA) and Rockefeller Foundation are actively looking for long-term solutions to help ease the city’s transportation woes. As first shared by DNA Info, earlier this year the two organizations put out a design competition asking participants to develop proposals that could transform various areas of the New York metropolitan region.

I am glad to note that New York City is catching "light rail fever" with this latest speculation.  Three other projects right now seem to be under consideration: Brooklyn-Queens, West Queens, and Staten Island.

All this excitement for street railway revival represents an about face from the Post-War attitude of Mayor LaGuardia who arranged for the termination of the Third Avenue trolley line. Many Third Avenue cars ended up in Vienna Austria where, in recent years, modern trams replaced them.  Four Third Avenue  streetcars are operable in in the following museums:  Seashore Trolley Museum, Shore Line Trolley Museum, National Capital Trolley Museum, and the Tramway Museum in Crich, England.

Picture of Seashore's Third Avenue car is here:
