Second commuter train platform planned for Union Station

 

It’s been talked about for years, but now a second train platform at Union Station is “in the offing,” according to Keolis General Manager and CEO David Scorey, and the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority expects to solicit design bids this fall.

 Faster completion urged for Union Station center platform 

 

 

 

A two-year project to install a center, high-level platform and new pedestrian bridge at Union Station is scheduled to be completed by August 2022 and may interrupt train traffic for only one weekend, engineers said at a public hearing Wednesday.

    Waiver sought to speed Union Station platform project in Worcester   

 

 

 

The Worcester Redevelopment Authority is seeking a waiver to the city’s demolition delay ordinance so construction can begin on a center island platform and pedestrian bridge at Union Station.

The Worcester Redevelopment Authority board voted Friday to authorize the use of $2.62 million in Federal Transit Administration funding for elements of the planned center island platform project at Union Station.

The U.S. Secretary of Transportation Elaine L. Chao announced on Wednesday that Worcester Union Station will receive $29.3 million for an 800-foot-long, high-level platform that will allow disabled access and enable multiple trains to stop at the same time.

Worcester, MA, Station Track Work


Effective March 12 & 13, 2022

 

Due to the installation of a temporary platform at the Worcester Station on March 12 and 13, Lake Shore Limited service will be impacted as outlined below. Schedule times listed on Amtrak.com have been updated to reflect these changes.

 

Trains will bypass Worcester on Track 2 during construction of the temporary platform. Once installed, this temporary platform will remain in service until the completion of the Center Platform Project, which is expected to be 2025.

 

Trains 448 and 449 will bypass Worcester with no alternate transportation provided. Passengers may choose alternate dates of travel or board/detrain at Springfield or Framingham.

 Project on track to double capacity at Union Station, 10th busiest in commuter rail network    


 
 
The project to build a center platform at Union Station is “on track” at roughly 50% completion and should be ready by next winter, Lt. Gov. Karyn Polito said during a visit to the station Tuesday morning.
