Bergen Record, 11/9/12:

NJ rail commuters growing more frustrated

With few details on when train service will be fully restored to North Jersey, NJ Transit rail customers in Bergen and Passaic counties who have been forced to rearrange their normal commutes are growing more frustrated.

Here is that story.

Philadelphia, PA Inquirer, 11/4/12:

SEPTA loaning 31 buses to NJ Transit

New Jersey Transit is getting a helping hand from their colleagues in Philadelphia.

Story here. NJT pretty much has its bus fleet back on the road in regular service, so it's understandable they are using donated buses from other agencies to provide the substitute service that is temporarily replacing rail service.

It was not overcrowding. The train had to run at restricted speed from Graw to Woodbridge due to signals being out and the trains were incurring 30 min delays causing domino delays and cancellations. On Sunday (Nov 5) I was picking up a friend at Woodbridge and the train left Rahway 10 min late and finally arrived at Woodbridge 50 min late. So NJT basically gave up service.

This is train 3267, 5:43 Long Branch express with connection to Bay Head. South Amboy is next. First and last cars are Quiet Cars. All tickets please.

Hudson-Bergen Light Rail is operating every 20 minutes on all branches through the weekend.

To clarify, normal weekend service on HBLRT consists of only two lines, not three since they did away with the Tonnelle-Hoboken route on weekends a couple years ago. So "all branches" are not running, but they will be on Monday. When just two lines are running, there is supposed to be a dedicated transfer at Newport so that one can travel between the 2 lines -- there's about a 3-minute headway scheduled. However I saw trains just missing the headway today, which means that one has to wait 15 or more minutes for the next train to accomplish the transfer. Come on, you can hold one minute if the connecting train is seen about to enter the station.

Apparently the ferry capacity is not enough to handle the rail passengers now coming into Hoboken Terminal (where there is still no PATH service) with the commuter service restored today. So NY Waterway is now shuttling passengers by bus to its 14th Street ferry terminal on the north side of Hoboken, which gives people another option to cross the river. From Jersey Journal, 11/12/12:

NY Waterway provides free shuttles along Washington Street in Hoboken to 14th Street ferry terminal

Starting this morning, NY Waterway is offering free shuttle service along Washington Street in Hoboken to the Hoboken 14th Street ferry terminal, the company announced.

Despite rails returning, commuters still sore over NJ Transit's Sandy response

Dan Clement is a lawyer by trade. But uncertainty over when he would be able to get a train again from Montclair to New York prompted him to explore a temporary new vocation: charter bus operator.
