Omaha (NE) World-Herald, 2/8:
 

Stuck car, fallen tree delay Amtrak train for 9 1/2 hours just south of Omaha

 

An Amtrak passenger train headed to Omaha was delayed twice — once by a car stuck on the tracks, then by a fallen tree — for a total of 9½ hours Sunday and Monday just south of the city.

 

The first delay occurred around 10:30 p.m. Sunday, when the train struck a car that had been abandoned on the tracks .  .  .

Then, around 2:15 a.m. Monday, the train struck a tree that had fallen across the tracks .  .  .

Despite the delays, the Amtrak crew earned praised from other passengers after they arrived at the station.

It's now close to 11 hours late. At least Salt Lake City got a convenient westbound departure time around 10:30 AM for a change. :P

Turns out the stuck car was actually a stolen car. If those car thieves are caught, they could be facing some serious federal charges over and above those for just stealing a car.  No word if the tree is facing charges as well.  :)

12+ hours late out of Elko, UT.  Still losing more time.  Might be wise to turn the train at Sacramento (and put passengers on Capitol Corridor) to get back some of the time.
