Well the countdowns are over, the time has come, and some are already well underway on their trips. Our OTOL Southeast RailFest 2011 event is here! I am within 20 minutes of departure from home.
As we venture out on the rails this week, the utmost goal is to have fun, perhaps even learn something new. Yet realize as you head for this event how much effort does go into planning everything and making sure things go smoothly. Sure mistakes can be made, and unforseen difficulties can emerge. But we learn from those and they are always in mind when planning subsequent Fests.
So while you are coming along on this journey to have a good time, also try to think of what contribution you have made to the event. Every little bit helps. Piotr and Bill M have each tracked Amtrak train performance in their own ways. Bill H has done a lot of legwork in Atlanta finding places for dinner and pre-purchasing fare smartcards for us. Alan has made the pdf files of many of the associated documents. Steve helps with dinner reservations. Ask yourself what you've done to help out the cause and remove some of the pressure from the person doing the primary planning. Good times often have their cost, and it's not just buying Amtrak tickets and reserving hotel rooms, it's the smaller things that make a big difference. I do thank those who have helped out in the early phases of this event.
Now let's get out there and enjoy ourselves for the next week!
