In closing out the events of 2005, NARP lists the major accomplishments of the year: January 8, 2005: CTA Blue Line Cermak Branch officially completed. Weekend service was actually restored on January 1, 2005. January 18, 2005: Amtrak opened its station at General Mitchell International Airport near Milwaukee, WI. Station serves all Hiawatha Service trains. March 11, 2005: Portland Streetcar was extended 0.6 miles from Portland State University to RiverPlace. May 8, 2005: Fresno Amtrak station renovation completed. However disputes with the city prevented it from going into service until November 19, 2005. June 6, 2005: Amtrak station at Oakland Coliseum opened. Station features direct connections to Oakland International Airport, and with BART. June, 2005: Amtrak's Kingman, AZ station was renovated as part of that city's downtown renewal project. Station serves SOUTHWEST CHIEF. June 9, 2005: San Diego's MTS Trolley new 6.3-mile extension opened up in Mission Valley. A new Green Line was created, and the Blue and Orange Lines was slightly shortened. July 29 & October 1, 2005: In segments, Santa Clara VTA opened its 5.3-mile Vasona LRT line. The first segment went only to San Jose Diridon Station (served by ACE, CalTrain, Amtrak). The line later was extended to Campbell/Winchester. Pending funding, the Vasona Line will be extended further in the future. September 3, 2005: SEPTA restored its 8.2-mile #15 Girard Avenue streetcar line using historic PCC cars. September 17, 2005: At Amtrak's Berkeley, CA station (served by Capitol Corridor), new platforms and pedestrian crossings were dedicated. October 1, 2005: Amtrak moved into the restored ex-Southern Railway station in downtown Greensboro, NC. This replaced a stop a few miles south of town. Station is served by the PIEDMONT, CAROLINIAN, and CRESCENT. November 12, 2005: Boston's MBTA reopened its Green Line LRT between North Station and Lechmere following a 17-month closure for reconstruction of its connection between the new tunnel at North Station and the remaining viaduct at Science Park. November 18, 2005: Reno, NV trench project was completed, removing dangerous downtown grade crossings. Amtrak did not move into the station in the trench until January 4, 2006.
