City Planner Rick Cunningham tells Nebraska Watchdog (see video below) that plans for a light rail system are still on track. According to Cunningham while heíd like it sooner ďin reality it probably wouldnít happen for four or five years.Ē

Warren "Oracle of Omaha" Buffet's criticism has merit on a business level; however community leaders must sell him on the compassion aspect of light rail. Since Buffet plans to give away more than 50% of his net worth after death to charity, he should know that streetcars are tools for economic development that will help the poor gain access to jobs.

Midlands Voices: A streetcar is undesired
As Omahans consider spending hundreds of millions of dollars for a streetcar system, proponents point to Kansas City as an example of a successful system. But the claims about Kansas City’s success are grossly overstated, and voters reject the system almost every time they are given a chance. I hope Omaha can learn from our misadventure.

Policymakers in Omaha may prove the author right if they build the line so streetcars run in mixed traffic operating at walking speed.  Also, if the line is not convenient to trip generation points, then ridership will be minimal.  Battery-powered jitneys may siphon away patrons.  Otherwise, smart operation will make downtown Omaha attractive to residents and visitors.  Sloan
