MTS.info.com:

Port Jervis Service Suspended Indefinitely Due to Catastrophic Damage from the Storm; Some Alternatives Available

Train service on the Port Jervis Line is suspended until further notice due to major and extensive damage to many portions of the line as a result of Hurricane Irene.

The full extent of the damage has not been determined, as much of the line remains inaccessible and under water. Through a combination of observations made on the ground and from a helicopter ride, Metro-North work crews have already observed significant washouts and fallen trees at numerous locations along the tracks west of Suffern. Some of the more significant issues that have been identified to date are as follows:

Three washout locations of 1,000 feet each near Sloatsburg
A 400-foot section of track washed out that is 8 feet deep south of Sloatsburg
Significant damage to railroad bridges
Suspected significant damage to the signal system which is visibly exposed and under water.
Metro-North will retain an engineering firm to perform a thorough inspection of 24 miles of infrastructure to determine the full extent of necessary repairs and determine required environmental permitting. Major construction work would follow. While no final determination can be made until this investigation is completed, it will take a number of months to rebuild the track, signal and bridge infrastructure that will be required to reinstitute train service.

Alternate Service Plan for Port Jervis Customers: Metro-North, working with Orange County, is busing to/from Harriman Station and Ramsey/Route 17. Buses will follow the train schedule. As road and station conditions improve in Orange County, Metro-North will seek to expand the bus options available.

In addition, customers can use their Port Jervis Line commutation ticket on the Newburgh-Beacon Ferry (which will resume service Tuesday) or the Newburgh-Beacon Bus. Customers will have direct bus service at Harriman station. Port Jervis Line commutation tickets will also be honored for travel on the Hudson Line. Customers from Salisbury Mills Station west to Port Jervis station can park at Harriman and Beacon or Cortlandt stations on the Hudson Line. Valid LAZ permits will be honored at these locations. Parking at these stations will be provided for those customers for the remainder of this week, although a permit does not guarantee a space.

More details from MTA Metro North RR's website in addition to what Ross posted above:

Port Jervis Service Remains Suspended Indefinitely Due to Catastrophic Damage from the Storm; Additional Alternative Busing Now Available

Train service on the Port Jervis Line remains suspended until further notice due to major and extensive damage to many portions of the line as a result of Hurricane Irene.

Metro-North is providing the following service alternatives for our Port Jervis Line customers:

Busing to Beacon Station from Port Jervis and Middletown:

Buses (with the exception of one round trip in the afternoon) will originate at Port Jervis Station, stop at Middletown Station, then go directly to Beacon Station on our Hudson Line for train service to Grand Central; outbound is the reverse.

See weekday busing schedule.

Busing to/from Harriman and Ramsey Route 17:

Metro-North is busing to/from Harriman Station and Ramsey/Route 17, where customers can transfer to train service. Buses follow the train schedule.

About that weekday bustitution: I realize that the easiest solution is to utilize the westernmost stations' proximity to I-84, and connect with Metro North's Hudson Line at Beacon. But it assumes that everyone is going to New York City. What about those who might be headed for points in NJ who would have transferred at Secaucus or Hoboken to other commuter rail lines or the HBLRT? They are going to have to get across Manhattan to Penn Station and then make further connections.

MTA Long Island RR website:

LIRR Restores Full Service to Montauk during Tonight’s PM Rush

The MTA Long Island Rail Road is restoring full service to the Montauk Branch east of Speonk during tonight’s (Wednesday, August 31) evening rush hour. The first eastbound train to operate will be the 6:17 PM from Jamaica to Montauk, which has a connection at Jamaica with the 5:51 PM train out of Penn Station. Upon departing Jamaica, the Montauk-bound train operates express to Bay Shore, then all local stops (with the exception of Bellport) to Montauk, arriving at 9:07 PM.

The first westbound train is the 10:38 PM from Montauk, making all local stops to Bay Shore, then operating express to Jamaica, arriving at 1:35 AM.

With the restoration of service to the entire Montauk Branch, the only LIRR service that remains suspended is east of Ronkonkoma to Greenport.

"We are delighted to be able to restore service to Montauk in time for customers who are heading out East for the Labor Day weekend," said LIRR President Helena E. Williams. "We know how important our service is to the local economy.

"We want to thank our customers for their patience as well as our employees for their extraordinary effort to restore service following Hurricane Irene."

Since there are still local power outages at LIRR stations, customers are advised that ticket selling machines and electronic audio/visual train announcement systems may not be operable. As a result, customers at stations where the service is operating, and the ticket selling machines are not operating, will not be charged the higher on-board fare for tickets purchased on the train.

Customers are reminded to purchase their monthly ticket, since tomorrow is September 1.

LIRR employees are continuing their around-the-clock work on the track east of Ronkonkoma to restore train service to this final remaining stretch of track damaged by Hurricane Irene. The damage included numerous fallen trees and power outages, particularly to crossing gates. Full service is expected to be restored east of Ronkonkoma for the holiday weekend.

For the latest information on LIRR train service, customers should monitor news and traffic reports, visit the MTA website or sign up for e-mail/text message service alerts from the LIRR. Customers can also contact the LIRR's Travel Information Center at 718-217-5477 (718-217-LIRR). If you are deaf or hard of hearing, use your preferred relay service provider or the free 711 relay to reach LIRR at 718-217-5477.

And here comes the Danbury Branch resuming Thursday morning!

Hurricane Irene Service Update

Danbury Branch Service resumes Thursday, September 1 with the 5:31 AM train from Danbury.

Regular weekday service is in effect on the Harlem Line (including service between Wassaic and Southeast), Hudson Line, New Haven Main Line, New Canaan Branch, and Waterbury Branch (with delays of 20-40 minutes due to utility power outages affecting grade crossings).

For the latest information, customers should continue to check the MTA's website at www.mta.info and sign up for customer email and text message alerts.

We regret any inconvenience you may experience as a result of this service disruption due to Hurricane Irene.

Metro North has issued an update. Port Jervis is still out of service. But they will be adding some substitute bus service on Monday 9/12/11 at stations that haven't had it since the storm.

Train service on the Port Jervis Line remains suspended until further notice due to major and extensive damage to many portions of the line as a result of Hurricane Irene.

The update
