From Denver, CO Rocky Mountain News, 9/1/05:

Lone Tree is the first in what could become a rush of cities asking to be moved up in FasTracks' construction timeline.

Mayor Jack O'Boyle is proposing that construction of the 2.3-mile light-rail line near the city be completed by 2009 - seven years ahead of schedule.

Well, I never thought the people in the state of Colorado would be demanding more Light Rail to be built faster. Well, I guess the Denver RTD is doing a good job. I hope the other cities follow Lone Tree if they decide to ask for it faster. I hope they find the extra local money.

Editorial in Denver, CO Post, 7/14/14:

Southeast Rail Extension would be a good deal

It's hard to believe that just a few years ago the Regional Transportation District was considering going to voters to ask for a tax hike to supplement funding for FasTracks. As recently as 2012, a hefty 0.4 percent sales tax increase was being considered.

Denver, CO Post, 8/3/14:

After the recession and costly increases for steel and concrete forced the Regional Transportation District to scrounge and scrimp to complete the 122-mile FasTracks mass transit project, the agency hit a jackpot last month. It wasn't a pot of gold. Rather, RTD unearthed a group of partners willing to commit $35 million to $40 million in cash, rights of way, permit fees and other items to help complete the $207 million Southeast Light Rail Extension in Douglas County.

Partners primed for coming Lone Tree light rail extension

Mayor Jim Gunning is excited about the Southeast Rail Extension expected to break ground in Lone Tree this spring.

He spoke passionately about what the three-stop extension of the  Regional Transportation District's  light-rail system will mean to the entire south metro region at a local realtor summit this summer.

RTD gears up for construction on Southeast Rail Extension

Construction on Denver Regional Transportation District's (RTD) $233 million Southeast Rail Extension project will begin May 10, the agency announced earlier this week.

After receiving a $92 million award from the Federal Transit Administration, RTD gave Balfour Beatty Infrastructure Inc. a notice to proceed with building the project. The remaining costs will be covered by local funding sources, RTD officials said in a press release.

The map in the item cited above is a current map, with the addition added, not a map of what the system will look like once the extension is open. Besides the E and F lines, it will also host the R line, scheduled to be open by the end of 2016.

Federal, state and local officials joined with Denver's Regional Transportation District (RTD) to officially break ground on RTD’s Southeast Rail Extension project, which adds 2.3-miles to the existing 19-mile Southeast Rail Line that parallels I-25. The light rail line will be extended from Lincoln Avenue to RidgeGate Parkway in Douglas County.

The $233.1 million construction project is estimated to create more than 300 jobs through 2019. The project will also add three bridges and three new stations. Three bridges will carry light rail trains across the 620-foot-long Lincoln Avenue Bridge; a 1,397-foot-long bridge over I-25; and the 506-foot-long bridge over RidgeGate Parkway.

The three new stations will be located at Sky Ridge Avenue (near the Sky Ridge Medical Center); the future Lone Tree City Center; and an end-of-line station at RidgeGate Parkway with 1,300 parking spaces. All stations will be within walking distance of more than 500 acres of new mixed-used, commercial and residential development.

The $233.1 million construction budget includes a $92 million capital investment grant to RTD from the Federal Transit Administration. The federal funds allowed RTD to give Balfour Beatty Infrastructure Inc., the notice to proceed with construction. Balfour Beatty is the construction contractor selected by RTD to build out the extension transit project. The firm has also been involved in RTD’s Eagle P3 commuter rail project and the North Metro commuter rail line.

RTD’s investment in the Southeast Rail Extension project is $71 million with remaining costs covered by $7.5 million in federal funds from the Denver Regional Council of Governments and an unprecedented $25 million in cash and an estimated $3 million in land and right-of-way permits from the city of Lone Tree, Douglas County, Coventry Development Corporation and the Southeast Public Improvement District.

RTD GM/CEO Dave Genova explained that when the project is completed in 2019, residents will have the option to travel from the RideGate Station on the E Line to Union Station, the F Line to 18th•California, and the new R Line through Aurora to Peoria Station. At the new Peoria Station riders will be able to connect to the University of Colorado A Line commuter train to Denver International Airport or to Union Station in downtown Denver.
