51(8) seems to be having some problems near Alderson, WV.  Right now, it is over 4 hours late (according to Track a Train).

50(7) running about 1-1/2 hours late up the NEC towards New York.

Until tonight, 51 has generally done better than 50.  Being 4+ hours late would be an alarming cause for concern.

Severe thunderstorm in West Virginia brought down trees across the tracks. Hopefully, it's a one and done issue.

This year my participation is the Empire Builder ride. As is my practice, I produced a special timetable for the Empire Builder. The timetable is somewhat in the style used by the pre-Amtrak railroads including many of the intermediate towns on the route, plus some bells and whistles just for fun.  If anyone is interested, a PDF is attached.

Continuing our watch on 51(7), this train is doomed! Not domed, doomed. It spent quite a while in Alderson, and as above it was due to a tree blocking the tracks. Then... THIS happened. We all know who was at fault despite the headlines and the descriptions of the train SLAMMING into the car, but obviously the train being many hours late it would have passed that crossing many hours sooner. I sincerely hope that after the West Virginia issues they got the connecting passengers off that train and to Chicago or to other stations where they could hook up. That is the scary part going into this knowing we are on the next version of that train.

It was terminated and turned at Indy to become 50. Passengers bussed to Chicago and a stub train brought the passengers for 50 from Chicago. All according to usually reliable sources from inside Amtrak.
