Weekend service adjustments May 1-3 for rebuilding

Reconstruction of the Metrorail system will continue over the weekend of May 1-3 with service adjustments on four of six rail lines.

This weekend, Blue and Silver line trains will operate at regular intervals. Green and Red line trains will operate every 15 minutes (plus additional trains between Grosvenor and Silver Spring during daytime hours). Orange Line trains will operate every 18 minutes.

Buses will replace Yellow Line trains between Huntington and King Street with Yellow Line trains operating between Franconia-Springfield and Mt. Vernon Square.

Metro is investing $5.5 billion to install new rail, ties, platforms, escalators, signals, lighting, communication systems, and more. It represents the largest capital investment -- and work effort -- since the system's original construction in the early 1970s.

 Red Line

Red Line trains will operate as follows throughout the weekend:

  • Between Shady Grove & Glenmont: every 15 minutes
  • Between Grosvenor & Silver Spring: every 8-10 minutes Saturday and Sunday from 9AM-9PM only

Work Performed: Ballast, track fastener and insulator renewal for a safer ride will cause Red Line trains to share one track between Twinbrook and Shady Grove.

 Orange Line
Trains every 18 minutes

Orange Line trains will share one track between Stadium-Armory and Cheverly to allow for platform rehabilitation, joint elimination, grout pad replacement, track fastener and insulator renewal for a safer ride..

 Silver Line
Regular weekend service

   Blue Line
Regular weekend service

 Yellow Line
Buses replace trains between Huntington & King Street

Yellow Line trains will operate regular weekend service between Franconia-Springfield and Mt. Vernon Square only.

Stations Closed: Huntington & Eisenhower Avenue

Last Train Times: To allow for shuttle bus connections. On Friday and Saturday nights, the last Yellow Line train will depart Franconia-Springfield at 2:25 a.m. and King Street at 2:36 a.m. On Sunday, the last train will depart Franconia-Springfield at 11:25 p.m. and King Street at 11:36 p.m.

Free shuttle buses will replace Yellow Line trains between King Street and Huntington. Shuttle buses will operate on two routes:

  • Express buses will operate between King Street and Huntington with no intermediate stops. Please add up to 15 minutes of travel time.
  • Local buses will operate between King Street and Huntington, making an intermediate stop at Eisenhower Avenue. Please allow 10 minutes of travel time for each station stop.

Work Performed: NTSB recommended track circuit replacement for a safer ride between King Street-Old Town and Huntington stations.

 Green Line
Trains every 15 minutes

Green Line trains will operate every 15 minutes throughout the weekend.

Green Line trains will share one track between Anacostia & Southern Avenue to allow for joint elimination, track fastener and insulator renewal for a safer ride.

Travel Tips

  • Riders who normally use Huntington may consider parking at Franconia-Springfield or Van Dorn St where Yellow Line trains will provide more frequent service.
  • Metrobus service may provide an alternate travel option for some riders. To check, plan your trip using Trip Planner and select the "bus only" option.
  • Before traveling, consult the trip planner at wmata.com to check the special schedule and reduce your wait time. Trip Planner is updated to reflect weekend rebuilding schedules on Fridays; please check on Friday afternoon or later.
