Freight train derailment holding up South Shore Line trains

A train derailment on the Far South Side is affecting commuter train service between Chicago and northwest Indiana Monday evening.

 

Three cars of a freight train derailed near a junction at 155th Street, holding up passenger service on the South Shore Line, transit officials said.

 

The train hit a bridge, and several trains are delayed indefinitely, according to the Northern Indiana Commuter Transportation District’s website.

COMMUTER ALERT: CN freight train blocking South Shore tracks has been cleared, official says

 

All South Shore commuter trains were delayed for several hours during Monday night's rush because of a CN freight train stopped south of the Kensington Station in Chicago, officials said.

 

The intermodal freight train stopped after at least one of the containers it was carrying struck a rail bridge about 6:30 p.m. Monday, said Patrick Waldron, a spokesman for Canadian National Railway.

 

A part of the freight train, which was blocking the track where the South Shore Line passes, was cleared about 8:30 p.m., Waldron said.
