Derailment Near Birmingham, AL

May 19, 2017

 

A derailment has been reported on the single mainline track near Birmingham, AL.  Norfolk Southern personnel are enroute to assess damage and to begin making repairs. All trains operating between Atlanta and Birmingham, Dallas, Mexico, New Orleans, and the West Coast will be delayed. We will provide updates as additional information becomes available.

Derailment Near Birmingham, AL

May 20, 2017

 

Repairs are underway following yesterday’s derailment near Birmingham, AL. Train service between Atlanta and the Southeast to and from Birmingham, Dallas, Mexico, New Orleans, and the West Coast will continue to be impacted. There is no current estimate on when the route will be returned to service.

 

The following trains are being diverted around the impacted area and are expected to incur transit delays of 6-8 hours:

  • 23E-19 (Southeast to Dallas/Mexico)
  • 24E-19 (Mexico/Dallas to Southeast)
  • 220-19 (Dallas to Southeast)
  • 226-19 (LATC/Lathrop to Southeast)
  • 298-19 (New Orleans to Southeast)
  • 219-20 (Northeast/Southeast to Dallas)

The following trains are being diverted around the impacted area via the Memphis Gateway and are expected to incur transit delays of up to 16 hours:

  • 23D-20 (Southeast to LATC/Lathrop)
  • 225-20 (Southeast to LATC/Lathrop)

Trains 22Q-19 (Southeast to New Orleans) and 290-20 (Birmingham to Northeast) have been annulled. We will provide updates as additional information becomes available.

NS Operations Alert 5/20:
 

Service to be Restored Sunday at Alabama Derailment Site

 

Norfolk Southern is experiencing service interruptions due to a mainline derailment that occurred on Friday, May 19th, 2017 approximately 35 miles east of Birmingham, AL in Pell City, AL.  NS is working to clear and repair the track and the track is estimated to be back in service on Sunday, May 21st, 2017.  Traffic is being rerouted  in order to minimize the impact, however customers with shipments normally moving over this route should expect delays of 24 to 48 hours.

30 car train derailment under investigation in St. Clair County

 

 

PELL CITY –Railroad officials are investigating a Friday night train derailment in Pell City that sent 30 Norfolk Southern train cars hurtling off the track. The derailment blocked traffic on Highway 78 and Truss Ferry Road for several hours until crews could clear the wreckage.

“The cars contained a mix of products including steel, lumber and pulp board,” the statement said. “Two of the derailed cars contained sodium chlorate, which is used in the production of white paper. The product is classified as hazardous but It does not pose a problem to the public.”

NS Operations Alert, 5/21/17:
 

Service Restored at Alabama Derailment Site

 

Train operations resumed late Saturday, May 20, 2017 at Pell City, AL.  A mainline derailment on Friday, May 19, 2017 impacted service through Pell City, approximately 35 miles east of Birmingham, AL.  All trains have returned to their normal scheduled routes. However, minimal delays are expected through the derailment site over the next 24-48 hours due to speed restrictions and track inspections.
