If anything comes from the project at the very least they could improve the lighting and signage on the platforms- they are increadibly dark there in daylight and near pitch black at night...

Springfield on the rise: Union Station seen as a centerpiece of city's revival

Springfield's Union Station has begun its transformation into the Union Station Regional Intermodal Transportation Center.

Built by the Boston & Albany Railroad in 1926, the station fell into disuse in the 1970s. Now, with the help of federal and state money, the Springfield Redevelopment Authority is working to renovate and reinvigorate the structure.

Column in Springfield, MA Republican, 2/7/15:

Springfield's Union Station renovation key to Pioneer Valley's future: Guest viewpoint

An interesting question to ponder - what does Springfield share in common with so many other U.S. urban centers as diverse and distant as New Orleans, Chattanooga, Kansas City, Denver, Dallas, Portland, Los Angeles and dozens more?

Each has its own "Union Station," a moniker that throughout America refers to a railway station where track and facilities are shared by two or more separate and, once upon a time, competing railroads, thus allowing rail passengers to conveniently connect between them.

Complete column continues.

Springfield, MA Republican, 1/16/15:

Springfield Union Station demolition progresses; real estate consultant coming on board

Skid steer loaders driven by rubbish-removing construction workers whirled and twirled Friday morning through the grand concourse of Springfield's Union Station.

Turn by turn, they grabbed a pile of construction debris from what was once a lunch counter or a row of ticket booths and hauled it outside for recycling or disposal.

Springfield Union Station parking deck taking shape, mild winter weather allows construction to continue

SPRINGFIELD - Contractors began erecting the six-level 377-spot parking deck at Springfield's Union Station this week, the work expected to be completed by March.

"It's nice to see this stuff really coming togetherr," said Executive Director Christopher J. Moskal , executive director of the Springfield Redevelopment Authority which owns station and is taking the lead in its rehabilitation. "I'm really pleased and amazed at the progress that has been made."

Both Moskal and Springfield Chief Development Officer Kevin Kennedy said relatively warm winter weather has allowed contractors to make good progress.

The $88 million rehabilitation and redevelopment of Union Station is still expected to be completed by December. Daniel O'Connell's Sons in Holyoke is the general contractor. About 70 construction workers are on the scene every day.
