U.S. Rep. Richard E. Neal, D-Springfield, toured Union Station on Monday with Amtrak representatives and city officials in search of ways to make the revamped depot a vibrant part of the city's future as well as a reminder of its past.

Amtrak platform won’t be ready for Union Station grand opening

 

The passenger train platform at Union Station in downtown Springfield will not be ready in time for the facility’s grand opening this coming winter. Chris Moskal, Director of the Springfield Redevelopment Authority, made the announcement Tuesday in a news release sent to 22News.

Funding Approved to Demolish Buildings in Springfield

 

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WRSP) — Several buildings in downtown Springfield are facing the wrecking ball to make way for an ambitious new plan.

 

Near the 10th Street railroad tracks stands vacant buildings.

 

With $650,000 in federal money, Sangamon County officials want to demolish them and make way for a transportation hub.

 

"So Amtrak, SMTD buses, potentially Greyhound buses, taxis, any kind of transportation will be consolidated there  .  .  .

Retail tenants for redeveloped Union Station announced

 

Significant new developments were announced on Thursday on the future of historic Union Station in Springfield.

Union Station is a part of Springfield’s past, and now it will be a part of it’s future.

Amid ongoing negotiations, Peter Picknelly confirms plan to move Peter Pan into Springfield's Union Station

 

Peter Pan Bus Lines will probably partially demolish and then completely remodel its bus terminal on Main Street as part of a series of moves made possible by the opening of Springfield Union Station and the redevelopment of Court Square.

Ask U.S. Rep. Richard E. Neal about Springfield's Union Station and he's likely to tell of being brought there as a little boy to get an ice cream treat at the soda fountain.

Springfield’s Union Station, shut since 1970s, is reopened for $95m

It opened in 1926, a hub for travelers and the commerce hurtling through Western Massachusetts. But time — and changing tastes in travel — were not friends. 

So in the 1970s, Springfield’s Union Station was shuttered.
