New Haven-Hartford-Springfield Rail Program "News Brief:"

New Haven State Street Station Pedestrian Bridge Installation (Video)

This video shows the installation of the new 31 foot long pedestrian bridge connecting the new entry to the stair and elevator tower at State Street Station in New Haven.

Construction crews installed the bridge on February 22, 2017.

This work is part of the $10 million federal Transportation Investment Generating Economic Recovery (TIGER) grant that the State of Connecticut received in September 2013. The grant provides the funding for the construction of a second platform at the station, which will expand the station’s ability to handle additional rail passenger services while mitigating delays and congestion on the busy Northeast Corridor.

Highlights of the project consist of:
• Construction of a 400 foot fully ADA compliant high-level train platform,
• 31 foot long pedestrian bridge connecting the entry to the stair tower,
• Canopies covering a portion of the platform,
• State-of-the-art video surveillance and passenger information systems,
• Installation of fiber optic cabling, connecting Amtrak and Metro-North Railroad, and;
• Communications networks to support surveillance and information systems.

This project began in Spring 2016 and is estimated to be completed in Fall 2017.

New Haven - Hartford - Springfield Rail Program, 3/22:

Construction Update: State Street Railroad Station

Beginning March 27th and concluding by April 3rd, there will be construction activity to replace the entrance canopy in front of State Street Station in New Haven.

During construction, access to the pedestrian bridge will remain open and there will be no disruption to train service.

Removal of the existing canopy and installation of the new canopy in front of the existing pedestrian bridge will occur during nighttime hours and the canopy to the north will be assembled during the daytime hours. There will be construction noise throughout this period and temporary lighting to support overnight work in the area. As needed, pedestrian traffic will be directed away from construction areas to ensure safety.

Access to the north and south driveways will be closed throughout construction until the crane leaves the site. However, the south sidewalk will remain open at all times and traffic patterns on State Street will allow for pedestrian drop off and pick up during peak train service hours of 7:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. During this time, New Haven Police Department will be on site to safely direct pedestrians to the sidewalk.

Please note that this schedule is subject to change.

This work is part of the overall upgrade of the New Haven-Hartford-Springfield rail line – now branded as the CTrail Hartford Line – scheduled to begin expanded service in January 2018.

Future updates on the status and location of construction activities will be provided on the NHHS Rail Program website at www.nhhsrail.com, Facebook, Twitter and by email. To receive email updates, please register on the NHHS Rail Program website.
