Service Update for Friday, April 24, 2015

The operation remained fluid this week while velocity performance held steady across the network. Total volume moved by the railroad once again topped 200,000 units for the sixth consecutive week and total trains held dropped by nearly 20 percent. While a significant outbreak of severe storms could occur from eastern Kansas down through Texas today, favorable weather conditions continue to exist throughout the rest of the network.

Our capital maintenance activity is now in full production with work continuing on new double-track projects along our Southern Transcon route. The Panhandle subdivision, which runs from Amarillo, Texas eastward through Oklahoma and into southern Kansas, will collectively receive approximately 18 miles of new double-track, nearly half of which is already in service. In addition, we will add approximately nine miles of new double-track along our Clovis subdivision in New Mexico, which is expected to finish in June and eliminate a significant bottleneck on the Southern Transcon. As this expansion work is being done, some trains may experience minor delays through the area.

Below is a look at the key operational performance categories for the week ending April 21:

Total trains held for the week declined by 17.5 percent to an average of 62.0 versus 75.1 recorded the prior week.

  • Versus the same week last year: better by 67.7%
Versus the same week in 2013: better by 40.2%

Total trains on the system was down 1.5 percent from the prior week with an average of 1,606 trains on the system.

Locomotive velocity, measured in miles per day (MPD), was 277.6, which is up 0.4 percent from the prior week’s 276.4 MPD.

Locomotive dwell declined by 1.5 percent from the prior week at 19.1 hours.

Car velocity was essentially unchanged at 221.0 MPD versus 222.1 MPD recorded the prior week.
  • Versus the same week last year: better by 14.2%
Versus the same week in 2013: better by 6.4%

Train velocity was also essentially unchanged from the prior week at 18.3 miles per hour.
  • Versus the same week last year: up 18.1%
Versus the same week in 2013: up 1.1%

Total volume exceeded 200,000 units for the sixth consecutive week with a robust 202,340 units moved in Week 15 (ending April 18).

Terminal dwell increased by slightly less than one percent to 23.5 hours versus 23.3 hours the prior week.
  • Versus the same week last year: better by 18.7%
Versus the same week in 2013: better by 2.9%
