East or west up Ga. 400? MARTA’s expansion still unclear
The transit authority is considering extending service from the North Springs station to the Forsyth County line. MARTA is examining three options for the project: bus rapid transit, light rail and extending the current heavy rail line.

MARTA's Northward March
The planned expansion of MARTA transit into North Fulton has been floating around the news over the past couple of months. Dubbed the Connect 400 initiative by MARTA, it is looking at expanding transit service north 11.9 miles from the North Springs station to Windward Parkway via either Bus Rapid Transit (BRT), Light Rail or Heavy Rail (the current MARTA rail).

Reporter Newspapers, 3/6/15:

Atlanta, GA Journal-Constitution, 3/5/15:
MARTA maps route extension to Alpharetta
In a concession to neighborhood opposition, MARTA has chosen an alternate route for a planned expansion of service northward along Ga. 400.
The MARTA board approved the preferred route, which crosses Ga. 400 not once but twice, at a meeting Thursday afternoon. MARTA studied several potential paths for a rail line or bus rapid transit route, including one that went up the west side and another that went up the east side, with no crossovers.
Glad to see positive movement on this Red Line extension. However keep me as a member of the believe-it-when-you-see-it club. Those bridges over the highway are going to make the project more costly than remaining on one side.... and we know how the state of Georgia is when it comes to new rail lines. I am at least delighted that they aren't considering a median-based system.

Atlanta In Town, 4/25/15:
MARTA plans to bring rail service to Alpharetta
MARTA has announced it wants to extend the Red Line north into Alpharetta, according to a report from WSB.
As expected some residents are unhappy with the plan, expressing concerns property values and the location of the tracks.
The issue is still very much current, but the report they cite from WSB TV is from 2013.

ATLANTA — Over the next seven months, the Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority (MARTA) will reach out to local leaders and state lawmakers with the aim of building support for an $8 billion expansion of commuter rail that would transform the region, reported the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
If successful, metro Atlanta will be a single file of major economic development up and down what is now Georgia 400, built along a rail line that would link Alpharetta with downtown Atlanta and its airport beyond. For the full story, click here.

I missed some news items in 2018 and earlier in 2019 about this. The idea of extending the heavy rail Red Line to Alpharetta is gone...kaput.... finished. It's been replaced by express lanes on GA-400 that would carry a busway. My skepticism above was on the money.
