I'd have to favor a downtown station over one at Dane County Airport. Amtrak's whole appeal is downtown to downtown service. If you're going to bring people to the airport anyhow, they may remain inclined to fly rather than ride the train. Airport stations are great, as the new one near Milwaukee's Mitchell Field has demonstrated. But not at the expense of a station serving downtown, where the majority of people want to go.

From Milwaukee, WI Journal-Sentinel, 5/6/10:

Madison rail station to be at Monona Terrace

Madison — Reversing himself, Gov. Jim Doyle said Thursday that Madison's future high-speed rail station should be placed near Monona Terrace, just blocks from the Capitol.

In deciding against a previously favored location at the Dane County airport farther from downtown, Doyle said he had listened to riders all along the planned Milwaukee to Madison passenger line and a state study that found the convenient downtown location would have lower track costs and 60,000 more riders a year.

And this story is here.

The story is from the Chicago Tribune

Will this routing require a back up move?

Sorry about the Title, I see now that it did not fit in the space provided. The Ca is the first part of the word Capitol.

The (UW) Badger Herald, 9/8:

Opinion

It’s about time Madison gets an Amtrak station

Farthest (sic) station is 40 minutes away by car

by Phil Michaelson

The University of Wisconsin has the largest population of students in the state, The fact that Amtrak doesn’t have a station on campus is ridiculous. Guess who’s behind it. Our good old buddy Gov. Scott Walker.

SNIP

What’s not so neat is the fact that Amtrak’s route through Wisconsin runs up from Chicago into Milwaukee and then bee-lines northwest to the Twin Cities. The nearest stop to Madison and the UW campus is about 40 minutes away in Columbus, Wisconsin. Columbus — the city that never sleeps, and a bustling metropolis home to almost a whopping 5,000 people.

All sarcasm aside, it’s just silly that the Amtrak system doesn’t have a stop in Madison.

Wisconsin State Journal, Madison, WI, 7/24/21:

If Madison gets passenger rail, where should the station go?

With prospects high for bringing passenger trains to Madison, the city is restarting efforts to locate a station that would provide access to pedestrians, bikes, buses and vehicles and be a catalyst for economic development.

As one can see from the above bunch of items from 11 years ago (those whose hyperlinks still work), the chosen plan was to run trains to Monona Terrace, a convention center near the state capitol and close to downtown.   While the whole thing eventually fell through, here's hoping those plans are dusted off and the downtown location is retained.

Letter to the Editor of Capital Times, 11/16/22:

   Letter | Make market a mixed-use project

Madison has an opportunity to fix a very fiscally, and functionally, challenged Public Market project at First and East Johnson streets. And the solution is not putting more taxpayer money into it but making a better project.

Letter to the Editor of Capital Times, 11/17/22:

Letter | Airport best site for Amtrak station

It’s recently been suggested that Madison should have an Amtrak station as part of the proposed public market at East Johnson and First streets. That’s a move in the right direction (that is, away from the disaster that would’ve been the earlier proposed Monona Terrace location) but it doesn’t get all the way to where it should be: Dane County Regional Airport.
