Press release from Sound Transit:

Special service Sounder trains from Everett to the Washington State Fair

02-Sep-2015

Sounder trains will serve fairgoers from Everett to Puyallup two Saturdays this year with free Pierce Transit bus between Puyallup Station and the fairgrounds

Sound Transit will operate special Sounder service to the Washington State Fair on Sept. 19 and 26, making it extra easy for Puget Sound residents to avoid gas and parking costs. Special Sounder trains will service nine stations between Everett and Puyallup. Passengers can get off at Puyallup Station and hop a free Pierce Transit bus to the Fair’s Red Gate.

Train schedule

Snohomish County riders will have the option of taking one of two trains to Seattle, where they will get off at King Street Station, cross the platform and board a train to Puyallup.

Trains leave Everett Station at 8:40 a.m. and 9:40 a.m. Trains from King Street Station to Puyallup leave at 9:50 a.m., 10:50 a.m. and 11:50 a.m.

South line trains will stop in Tukwila, Kent, Auburn and Sumner before reaching Puyallup Station.

Three return trains from the Fair will leave Puyallup at 5:50 p.m., 6:50 p.m. and 7:50 p.m. Snohomish County riders heading to Edmonds, Mukilteo and Everett will need to take the first two trains out of Puyallup to connect to northbound trains departing King Street Station at 6:55 p.m. and 7:55 p.m.

How to purchase your Sounder event train ticket

Riders can skip lines and save up to 20 percent on train and fair tickets by buying a Sounder Train Express Pack in advance at thefair.com/sounder. Express Packs include a round-trip train fare and State Fair admission, and are only sold online. Price is based on boarding location.

To purchase Express Packet tickets, riders can go to thefair.com/sounder, select “Sounder Train Express Pack - North” or “Sounder Train Express Pack - South” and follow the screen prompts. Tickets purchased online can be printed at home.

Riders also have the option of using their ORCA cards or buying train tickets at the stations. Tickets at Snohomish County Sounder stations are on sale now. The adult fare from Everett is $4.50 per rider and $4.25 from Mukilteo and Edmonds. Snohomish County riders using ORCA need only tap their cards once in Everett, Mukilteo and Edmonds to reach Puyallup. Riders will need to tap off at Puyallup to avoid additional fare charges.

Pierce and King County riders can buy their train tickets at stations now. Regular fares for Sounder South riders apply.

As with all Sound Transit services, fares are discounted for children, seniors and people with disabilities.

More information on special Sounder train service to the fair is available at soundtransit.org/soundertothefair.

Fairgoers can also take ST Express bus service. Everett residents can ride ST Express route 510 to Seattle and transfer to ST Express Route 578. More detailed bus schedule information is available at soundtransit.org/Schedules/ST-Express-Bus

State Fair hours, admission fees and other information can be found at http://thefair.com/  .

Regular fares will apply for all Sound Transit services. ORCA and all standing transit passes will be accepted. Getting an ORCA card is a great way to skip lines at ticket vending machines. Cards only cost $5 for adults, plus whatever amount a rider chooses to load in the card’s E-Purse or the cost of a pass that is good for unlimited transit trips. ORCA works on trains, buses and ferries throughout the region. More information is available at orcacard.com

Perhaps one of our Seattle area members can shed some light for me on why Sound Transit needs to run Sounder North and Sounder South as two separate railroads.  This is a good opportunity to run trains directly from Everett to Puyallup (with a stop in Seattle of course), so why would they require a change of trains in Seattle?  One seat rides would be more attractive to those north of Seattle who have further to travel to reach the fair.

Probably because the regional plans Sound Transit puts to the voters have to benefit the urban parts of the three most populous counties in the state, with the need to get an overwhelming yes vote from Seattle voters. Both SOUNDER routes traverse areas that support an anti-tax crusader' s constant ballot measures.(Many of which get overturned on Constitutional grounds in the State Supreme Court) The anemic ridership on the North Line could become an issue. Also, the North Line's relatively single track could affect timing to prevent reliable connections. I would like to see a reliable transfer at King Street Station be established before a run through train.

One issue I have with the North Line is the lack of a station at the North edge of Downtown Seattle. ST Express and Community Transit buses have the advantage of not having to go South to go North. I would like to see a study into the possibility of retrofitting the tunnel with a station, under LINK's University Street Station. Ventilation issues would have to be looked into, air retrofitting it for electric trains. A station there could be what is needed for run through services.

Once again this year you can let go and ride the Sounder train to the Washington State Fair in Puyallup!

Special Sounder trains will run on two Saturdays, Sept. 19 and 26, serving nine stations between Everett and Puyallup. From Puyallup Station, you can jump on a free Pierce Transit shuttle bus to the Fair’s Red Gate.

Due to popular demand, we increased train capacity this year. Two five-car trains will take passengers between the Snohomish County stations of Everett, Mukilteo and Edmonds and Seattle’s King Street Station.

Snohomish County passengers will change trains at King Street Station, crossing the platform (just a few steps away) to board seven-car trains that stop in Tukwila, Kent, Auburn and Sumner before reaching their Puyallup Station destination. Three round-trip trains will run between Seattle and Puyallup.

After the Fair, head to the Fair’s Red Gate to take the shuttle back to Puyallup Station. Allow yourself plenty of time to catch the train at Puyallup Station.

Snohomish County riders: To return by train, you must take one of the first two trains leaving Puyallup Station at 5:50 and 6:50 p.m. The last train trip from Puyallup ends in Seattle.

Use your ORCA card, buy a Sounder ticket at the station (starting Sept. 1 in Snohomish County), or buy a Sounder Train Express Pack (with both your Sounder fare and State Fair admission) in advance online starting in early August. If you use ORCA, be sure to tap on at your station before you board the train and tap off at Puyallup Station to deduct the correct fare; tap on and off again for your return ride.
