Competing interests debate future of Nickel Plate Railroad

The fate of the historic Nickel Plate Railroad that runs through Hamilton County could be decided this summer—but there’s no consensus on what the corridor should look like or on the impact or costs of projects.

Officials in Fishers and Noblesville, which split ownership rights along with Hamilton County for the 37-mile railroad, are seeking to convert sections that run through their communities into a 14-foot-wide pedestrian trail.

But the former operator of the track, the Indiana Transportation Museum, is fighting to keep the railroad. Museum officials say that, if a trail must be built, it should run adjacent to the tracks, not replace them.

Group to submit plan to keep Nickel Plate rail line in operation

FISHERS, Ind. (WISH) — A group called the Hoosier Heritage Railroad is submitting a plan to keep the Nickel Plate Road rail line in operation. The mayors of Fishers and Noblesville have already submitted their own plan to turn the line into a recreational trail.

The historic rail dates back to the mid-19th century. Thousands of Hoosiers remember it as their route to the Indiana State Fair.

Hoosier Heritage Railroad plans to redevelop and eventually extend the rail from Kokomo to Indianapolis. They’d also like to add recreational trails alongside the tracks.

Transportation museum escalates Nickel Plate Railroad fight

The Indiana Transportation Museum said it requested a federal temporary restraining order against the Hoosier Heritage Port Authority on Monday in an attempt to regain use of the Nickel Plate rail line in time for next month’s Indiana State Fair.

The Noblesville-based museum and area officials have been wrestling over the future of the 37-mile railroad for months. Noblesville and Fishers are seeking to convert a section of the rail corridor into a pedestrian trail, but the museum argues the rails should remain and that it should be able to operate trains along it.

The port authority issued a request for proposals for a new operator of the track, and responses were received last month. Several groups submitted responses, including the transportation museum, the Indianapolis Metropolitan Railway Co. of Indianapolis, Hoosier Heritage Railroad Inc. of Fishers and Nickel Plate Heritage Railroad of Arcadia.

The authority had been expected to discuss the proposals Monday night. Hiowever, it delayed the discussion until next week after deciding to review a fifth proposal it received after the deadline, due to delivery issues.

Vote kills State Fair Train for good, clears way for new Hamilton County greenway

Fishers and Noblesville on Monday selected a new operator for the Nickel Plate rail line that would run trains north of Noblesville and free up the track south of the suburb for the construction of a greenway.

The plan by the Nickel Plate Heritage Railroad would kill the popular Indiana State Fair Train for good.

WISH-TV Indianapolis, IN 7/31/17:

Nickel Plate Trail to run south of Noblesville, train to run north

FISHERS, Ind. (WISH) — A portion of the Nickel Plate Rail will soon become a Monon-style pedestrian trail in addition to a historical train running north out of Noblesville.

Fishers and Noblesville city leaders made it official Monday morning, choosing the Nickel Plate Heritage Railroad as the rail line’s operator. The plan associated with that bid includes the cities building a multipurpose trail south of downtown Noblesville and the rail line maintaining a historical train from the Historic Noblesville Square and going north. The decision requires rail banking the southern portion of the rail line.

Fishers Mayor Scott Fadness, a longtime supporter of the Nickel Plate Trail, “I think this is a really a win-win scenario,  .  .  .

Nickel Plate ‘Rail to Trail’ opponents vow to continue fight against plan

HAMILTON COUNTY, Ind. – A vote Monday in Hamilton County will likely spell the end of the Indiana State Fair train just days before the fair is set to begin.

People in Noblesville and Fishers are fired up tonight over the vote to turn the Nickel Plate Rail there into a greenway.

The mayor of Fishers was quick to announce his pleasure with the results.

“I really think it’s a win-win, where we’re able to progress the trail concept forward to connect Indianapolis, city of Fishers, city of Noblesville, but at the same time allow Noblesville to maintain that history and heritage with the rail line going north into the rural parts of Hamilton County,” said Mayor Scott Fadness.

But thousands of his and Noblesville’s residents are still fighting it.
