The Washington Post, posted 7/5:

Victim of fatal Metro stabbing was a recent American U. grad who loved D.C.

He was a Connecticut transplant thriving in his adopted city, a policy and politics wonk known to capture sun-basked monuments, cherry blossoms and the marble halls of power in Washington with his ever-present camera.

On July 4th, Kevin Joseph Sutherland stepped onto the Metro to visit friends, but he never arrived at the gathering. In an altercation police believe was motivated by a robbery gone awry, Sutherland was stabbed to death aboard a train during the Saturday afternoon rush at the NoMa-Gallaudet Station on Florida Ave., Northeast. Friends and authorities believe Sutherland was randomly attacked as he made his way through the city on a national holiday.

Police late Sunday released an arrest warrant for suspect Jasper Spires on charges of first degree murder, but they did not elaborate on how they developed him as a suspect and did not release any additional information about him. Police are searching for him and warned people not to approach him.

The Washington Post. posted 7/6:

Arrest made in fatal stabbing of American U. grad at D.C. Metro

District police on Monday arrested a man they believe is the suspect being sought in the Independence Day stabbing death of a passenger who was robbed aboard a Metro train, according to D.C. Police Chief Cathy L. Lanier.

Officials said authorities are awaiting confirmation on the man’s identity. But Lanier said, “It looks like we have the suspect in custody.”

Jasper Spires, 18, of Northwest, has been charged in a warrant with first-degree murder while armed.

Police had issued a wanted poster on Sunday naming him the suspect, and Lanier said police considered him so dangerous that she had the fliers distributed to every patrol officer and ordered dispatchers to broadcast a description every two hours. Lanier said the man was arrested Monday morning in the 4800 block of Georgia Avenue NW, after being spotted by patrol officers.

Witnesses to fatal stabbing on D.C. Metro train didn't intervene

McLEAN, Va. - Kevin Sutherland died in the first-ever homicide aboard a Metro train in the subway system's nearly 40-year history, stabbed to death after resisting a robbery attempt. The attack stunned passengers who watched it unfold.

In the days since, it has sparked a furious debate: Should Sutherland's fellow passengers have done anything to stop it? Could they have done anything even if they wanted?

Chicago Now "CTA Tattler, 7/12:

10 DC Metro passengers watch rider get stabbed to death; what would you do?

A 25-year-old man was robbed, beaten, kicked and stabbed to death 30 or 40 times by a teenager, as about 10 passengers on the Washington, D.C., Metro train watched in terror and horror.

After the 18-year-old finished stomping and stabbing the life out of Kevin Joseph Sutherland, he began demanding money and wallets from some of the other passengers. He then got off at the next stop.

No more than three minutes had passed. It takes about three minutes to get from Fullerton to North/Clybourn on the Red Line.

From the riveting Washington Post story on the July 4 murder:

“We were in a moving train,” said a 52-year-old woman, who spoke on the condition that she not be named because she is both a victim and a witness to a crime. “You’re not really sure what you need to do. . . . This man is holding a bloody knife. I don’t think anyone was going to try and stop him.”

WMATA news release, 7/1/16:

Metro displays photos taken by Kevin Sutherland at the NoMa-Gallaudet Station

Metro is showcasing photographs captured by Kevin Sutherland, the American University graduate who was tragically killed aboard a Metrorail train on July 4, 2015, at the NoMa-Gallaudet Station starting today.

Sutherland was a talented photographer who enjoyed taking pictures of Washington, D.C. landmarks. He was traveling to capture Fourth of July fireworks when he became the victim of a horrific crime.

Working through Metro's Art in Transit program, Sutherland's family asked to display some of Kevin's art, and Metro was pleased to provide the venue.

"It is a very emotional thing for us to see our son's photography displayed in the NoMa station,” Kevin's father Douglas Sutherland said. “Kevin had many gifts and he was becoming a very talented, self-taught photographer. We are very grateful to the DC Metro and the Art in Transit program for helping us put his works on display for so many others to enjoy. We will never stop wondering about the beauty he would have captured had his life not been cut so short."

The photographs include images of Union Station, Rhode Island Ave Station, the Washington Monument, the U.S. Capitol Dome, the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial, the Jefferson Memorial, the U.S. Air Force Memorial, and fireworks on the National Mall.
