Dinner too in Austin after the MetroRail ride.   So far a few downtown restaurants I clicked on in Google Maps were very expensive.  Austin is known for its bars & pubs along 6th Street so hopefully we find something to all of our liking.

Discussion of off train meals in Austin during Louisiana-Texas RailFest 2018 on Wednesday, July 18, 2018.

I agree with Kevin's assessment that restaurants near the downtown Metro stop tend to be high end steak/seafood restaurants.

I have attempted to make a list of some of the more affordable options:

Moonshine Patio Bar and Grill (Southern fare), .1 mile from downtown Metro station

https://www.yelp.com...nd-grill-austin

Roaring Fork (American), .3 miles from downtown Metro station

https://www.yelp.com...ing-fork-austin

Cafe Blue (steak and seafood), .1 miles from downtown Metro station

https://www.yelp.com...downtown-austin

Eureka! (burgers and American)., .2 miles from downtown Metro station (on 6th street)

https://www.yelp.com/biz/eureka-austin

I also looked for restaurants near the HGI Downtown:

Waller Creek Pub House (burgers, salads and beer), .1 mile from HGI

https://www.tripadvi...stin_Texas.html

Moonshine (see above), .2 miles from HGI

https://www.tripadvi...stin_Texas.html

Old School Bar and Grill (American, pub), .3 miles from HGI (on 6th street)

https://www.tripadvi...stin_Texas.html

BD Riley's Irish Pub (Irish and burgers), .4 miles from HGI (on 6th street)

https://www.tripadvi...stin_Texas.html

As Kevin mentioned above, there are a slew of pubs on 6th street, most of which serve food, but I could not find menus.

For Austin, let's not base a restaurant's location on its proximity to Downtown Station (MetroRail).  We're already downtown, and that train line will only take us out of town where there are even fewer selections of places to eat.   The city is pretty walkable, although the HGI is a little to the east by the freeway a bit off the beaten track.

Comfort food (diner type menu):   24 Diner   (actually closer to the Amtrak station than much else)

Second Bar + Kitchen  Menu

Italic Menu

Iron Works BBQ

Roaring Fork (in Intercontinental Hotel) Mentioned above, but here is the Menu .

Also mentioned above, found menu for Waller Creek Pub House.

Cannon and Belle (located within Hilton hotel adjacent to MetroRail)

Or.... if staying at the HGI, their own restaurant on the 18th floor: Eighteenth Over Austin Menu

In a different direction, but known to be a reasonably priced chain, is IHOP. It's about 4 blocks south of the HGI along the I-35 frontage road.

It was mentioned in the chat last night that we might want to skip Austin for an organized group dinner.

Maybe those of us who plan to be in Austin could weigh in as to whether they want to have a group dinner organized in advance or whether they prefer just "playing it by ear" once we arrive in Austin.

It would be helpful to know in advance so that those researching will not be "wasting" their time.

My "vote:"  I am certainly OK with us being on our own for dinner in Austin (or getting together in small groups at the last minute).

I am OK with being on our own. I am at the Hilton anyway, so almost any place around the Metro station would work for me.
