Winter Weather Update

To All of our Commuter Rail Customers

Please be advised that on Wednesday, February 9th we will be preparing for the snow storm that has been forecast by the National Weather Service. Part of that preparation means that our engineering department will be out at all commuter rail stations salting and clearing snow.

This is just a friendly reminder to stay safe when boarding or de-boarding a commuter rail train. Please be sure that you hold on to the handrail and only board where a conductor is present. We recommend that you plan to arrive at the station 5-10 minutes prior to your train’s departure time to avoid any slips, falls or accidents when hurrying to get to the platform.

We would also like to introduce our newest “In House” video production called “The Effect of Salt on Railroad Crossings”. The film urges motorists to obey gates and signals at crossings even when a train’s arrival does not appear imminent. False activations often occur during the snowy winter months when salt is spread on the railroad crossings; the salt acts as a conductor activating the crossing. We have urged the local DPWs not to salt railroad crossings when salting the roadways in their cities and towns.

The activation of these crossings may also affect the on-time performance of your train.
