Planners pick DC location for maglev train that could reach Baltimore in 15 minutes

WASHINGTON — The Mount Vernon Square neighborhood has been chosen as the place District travelers may one day pick up a high-speed train capable of transporting riders at 311 mph.

The Northeast Maglev, the company pushing for the new train system, released a new report recently that nixed two remaining station options in NoMa Gallaudet.

The Washington Post,11/17/18:

D.C.’s Mount Vernon Square eyed for high-speed maglev train station

The District’s Mount Vernon Square area is in the running to be the home of the proposed high-speed maglev train that would take passengers from the nation’s capital to Baltimore in 15 minutes.

Project officials have settled on putting the maglev station in the trendy Northwest neighborhood that was once known for its run-down parking lots but now is a popular destination with condos, shopping and restaurants.

In Baltimore, project officials have yet to settle on having the maglev station in the Inner Harbor or in an area of South Baltimore that is slated for development, . . .

Screenshot courtesy Northeast Maglev
Northeast Maglev, the company bringing the maglev high-speed train project to the Northeast Corridor, joined with the Baltimore City, Baltimore County, Northern Anne Arundel County, and Prince George’s Chambers of Commerce, to announce a partnership offering the business organizations’ support for the first phase of the multi-billion dollar project and the local business opportunities it will create.

All four chambers represent geographic areas along the proposed high-speed train’s initial route. The Superconducting Maglev (SCMAGLEV) train will start with a 36-mile route from Washington, D.C. to Baltimore City, with a stop at BWI Marshall Airport. Ultimately, one-hour service from Washington, D.C. to New York City will be available.

The project is currently under review by federal, state and local agencies as the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) and the Maryland Department of Transportation-Maryland Transit Administration (MDOT-MTA) prepare an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS). Project construction could begin in 2021 if timely approvals are received.

The four Chambers of Commerce serve more than 1,500 member organizations, representing cities, agencies and businesses throughout portions of Central Maryland interested in the project’s development and the contributions it will make to the business community.

Northeast Maglev is continuing to work to engage members of local communities, listening to residents and addressing concerns while partnering with like-minded organizations that seek to maximize the benefits associated with bringing a high-speed train to the region.

Federal review of Baltimore-Washington high-speed maglev project ‘paused’

The Federal Railroad Administration has halted its analysis of the proposed train to give proponents time to provide more details about its design and engineering.

The Federal Railroad Administration has temporarily halted its analysis of the proposed high-speed “maglev” train system in the Washington region to give those behind the project more time to provide details about its design and engineering.

Wayne Rogers, chief executive of Northeast Maglev, the team of private investors behind the project to provide service between Washington and Baltimore in 15 minutes, confirmed the delay in the federal analysis, saying the pause is related to optimizing the design of the maglev, its entire alignment and the stations.

Rogers said the company is working to provide the “answers necessary” to move forward the environmental impact statement, or EIS. . . .

Maglev opponents seek to derail project in Md. state legislature

Opponents of a high-speed train proposing to connect D.C. to Baltimore have introduced legislation to block state funding for the project known as the Maglev, hoping to derail proceedings as developers undertake numerous studies and reviews.

“This bill will not kill the Maglev project,” said Delegate Nicole Williams, of Prince George’s County, during a House committee hearing on Wednesday. “If the Northeast Maglev wishes to show that they’re truly concerned about the communities in which this project will impact then they will say ‘no, we do not need our state tax dollars to fund this project.”

Attempts in previous years to pass bills like this one have failed to accomplish anything, and Wayne Rogers, who leads the Northeast Maglev rail project, argued this bill should see the same fate.

FRA solicits comments on DEIS for proposed Northeast Maglev system

The Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) and Maryland Department of Transportation Maryland Transit Administration have prepared a draft environmental impact statement (DEIS) for a proposed superconducting maglev train that would operate between Baltimore and Washington, D.C.

The DEIS evaluates the potential beneficial and adverse environmental impacts of the Superconducting Magnetic Levitation Project (SCMAGLEV). The private-sector project is being proposed by Baltimore-Washington Rapid Rail LLC, proposes to construct and operate the high-speed technology, which would run on a grade-separated, fixed guideway powered by magnetic forces at speeds of over 300 mph. The system would not operate on standard steel wheel rail tracks and therefore requires a dedicated grade-separated guideway, according to the DEIS.

Amtrak CEO voices opposition to proposed MAGLEV train line

Amtrak CEO William Flynn laid out his reasons for opposing the proposed MAGLEV train line in the Northeast Corridor.

Flynn told a House subcommittee Thursday that once the MAGLEV is built, it would only serve the wealthy because the tickets are much more expensive than Amtrak.

He also bashed the cost, saying the technology is environmentally disruptive and much more expensive than rail service.

Instead, Flynn pushed for Congress to fund upgrades to Amtrak that would allow for faster transportation between D.C. and Baltimore and D.C. and New York.

D.C. wants changes to maglev train proposal, citing downtown disruptions and increased traffic

The District’s comments signal doubts that the train line would be a good fit, but don’t take a stance on the project

The District is urging federal officials to modify key aspects of a proposed high-speed maglev train line before deciding whether to support a project that would take passengers between Washington and Baltimore in 15 minutes.

As planned, the maglev line and its Mount Vernon Square station would be disruptive to the neighborhood and to New York Avenue, city officials said in comments submitted to the Federal Railroad Administration, the agency leading a federal environmental study.

The FRA, assisted by the Maryland Transit Administration, is nearing completion of a review that could lead to tunneling as early as next year. If approved, the 40-mile magnetic-levitation train system could be in operation by 2030.

Proponents say the Washington-Baltimore corridor would be the first leg of a system that eventually would carry passengers between D.C. and New York in an hour.

Baltimore-Washington Rapid Rail has been 'flying under the radar' for 2-years. Here's the latest.

Proposed Maryland Maglev Tunnel Project Under Westport Community

BALTIMORE – Baltimore-Washington Rapid Rail is working toward a high-speed magnetic levitation train from Washington D.C. to New York by way of Baltimore.

The Baltimore Banner has reported that private company, Baltimore-Washington Rapid Rail is working toward a high-speed magnetic levitation train from Washington D.C. to New York by way of Baltimore. According to the report, the private company reached a settlement outside of court with Westport Capital Development that “allows for construction of a rail tunnel underneath housing and mixed-use developments planned for the South Baltimore waterfront.”

After failing to negotiate the Westport property purchase with Stonewall Capital, Baltimore-Washington Rapid Rail filed to have the property condemned. Phase 1 of construction would entail one of two plans. . . .
