SERVICE ALERT

Virginia Railway Express (VRE)

Amtrak Step-Up Program Temporarily Suspended Effective Monday, July 13, 2020

As Amtrak continues to ramp up service following the COVID-19 adjustments, they are working to manage social distancing onboard their trains just as VRE is doing. Amtrak can limit the number of passengers by reducing the number of seat bookings permitted on each train. Since VRE passengers utilizing the Amtrak Step-Up trains are not pre-booked, the Step-Up program is being temporarily suspended.

Effective Monday July 13th, Step-Up tickets used in conjunction with VRE multi-ride tickets will not be accepted on the designated Amtrak trains.

The duration of this suspension is unknown at this time. We will continue to work with Amtrak to reinstate the program once it is practical to do so.

Please visit VRE.org for updates as we receive them.

VRE Monthly Online Forum, 7/1/20 (excerpts)

Good afternoon and welcome to the July 2020 edition of the Online Forum.

VRE, along with the support of our staff, contractors, host railroads and other stakeholders continues to prepare for the safe return of ridership.  We would like to thank all involved, especially the front-line mechanics, cleaners and train crews as well as those riders who have been with us throughout the pandemic.

As ridership continues to slowly increase, you will see signage and other visual cues at the platforms and onboard the trains to help manage social distancing efforts.  Face coverings are still required. We are also in the process of installing hand sanitizer dispensers at platforms and onboard our trains. One of our objectives is to also enhance our contactless footprint. Switching to VRE Mobile instead of paper tickets is way one, but you will also see the paper brochures, schedules, and other literature onboard our trains disappear. You will be able to get the digital versions of the same materials using scannable QR codes.  You should see this improvement onboard all trains within the next couple of weeks.

We’re ready when you are ready to come back!

Let’s get on to the questions!

Return to full schedule

Obi-Wan from Kingstowne, VA asks
Have you seen ridership increase to where you may start running a normal schedule? Hypothetical, as it may be years before standing room crowds on VRE or metro again: will you permit crowded trains out of necessity or leave riders at platforms? This is important question as I can take metro rather than wait for a VRE that won't let me board.

VRE Response
Yesterday, total system ridership was just over 1,100.  With the current “S” schedule operation we can support over 3,000 and still maintain social distancing efforts.  Once ridership begins to come back we will adjust the level of service with the intent on managing social distancing efforts as long as possible.  We have no plans or need to deny boarding at this time.  Once back to a full schedule, and as ridership continues to increase the wearing of face coverings will become even more important if social distancing onboard becomes a challenge.

VRE Train Utilization Trends

Masks are Required

Christine from Fredericksburg, VA asks
I started riding the train last week seeing that masks were required. But every trip both north and south I saw passengers not wearing masks. When will this be enforced?

VRE Response
Face coverings are already being enforced with at or near 100% compliance.  You may see passengers onboard who have removed the face coverings since social distancing is still possible on board, but most likely it is the few passengers who have a medical exemption from wearing the covering.  In those few cases, we have asked the conductors to ensure social distancing is followed.

Your Part in COVID-19 Mitigation: Face Coverings Required on Platforms and on Trains

For those who cannot telework and absolutely need to continue their daily commute, please practice proper social distancing onboard the trains, limiting interactions and exposure to other passengers and our crew.

Additionally:

•Wear a cloth face covering per Executive Order 63. Face coverings are required on the platforms and onboard the trains.
•Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth.
•Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash
•Wash your hands frequently with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after going to the bathroom, before eating, and after blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing. If soap and water are not readily available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer with at least 60-percent alcohol.

VRE press release

July 21, 2020

VRE to Add Daily Roundtrip Train on Fredericksburg Line

Alexandria, Va. – To better support social distancing on platforms and trains, the Virginia Railway Express (VRE) will add a round trip to its Fredericksburg Line schedule effective Monday, July 27. "We are closely monitoring ridership on both the Fredericksburg and Manassas lines and will adjust service as the number of passengers grows," said Rich Dalton, VRE's acting CEO. "We have seen enough of an increase on our Fredericksburg Line to warrant an additional round trip. These two new trains, along with other measures, will allow us to continue to protect the health and safety of our passengers and train crews."

Train 300, which departs Spotsylvania at 4:54 a.m., will take commuters northbound and train 307, which departs Union Station at 4:10 p.m., will carry them southbound. These two trains will supplement VRE’s reduced-service “S” schedule, consisting of eight daily trains on each of two lines, which the commuter railway implemented on March 17 in response to the current health crisis.

The new morning train will reduce the number of riders on what currently is VRE’s first northbound train of the morning, where the number of available seats is approaching 50 percent. The afternoon train will serve as an alternative for riders of two trains, where the number of available seats is around 40 percent.

In June, VRE installed decals on its platforms and in rail cars to support social distancing. Onboard graphics now indicate where passengers should sit and stand in and guide them to window seats in every other row to ensure proper distancing. These measures reduce the number of available seats, on average, from 130 to 45 per rail car.

VRE’s Train Utilization Trends web page has been updated to reflect total seats, maximum capacity to support social distancing, and current daily ridership. This information serves as a decision-making tool for passengers who want the greatest amount of distancing. VRE also is exploring ways to notify passengers when trains are near or at capacity.

A new train-cleaning process and the installation of hand-sanitizer dispensers on trains and platforms complement VRE’s social-distancing measures. VRE’s Mobile app allows riders to purchase and validate tickets on their smartphone, thereby avoiding contact with ticket vending machines on platforms.

The 13th largest commuter rail service in the U.S., VRE’s mission is to provide safe, cost effective, accessible, reliable, convenient, and customer-responsive commuter-oriented passenger rail service. The 4.5 million rides the railroad provides annually in Northern Virginia and Washington D.C. remove some 100 million vehicle miles from the region’s interstates. Learn more at www.vre.org.

VRE Train Talk Alert 10/5/20

VRE Service Advisory: VRE Update from CEO Rich Dalton

We believe it’s important that you always have a direct line to VRE staff. Of course, we’re not presently able to sit together and talk during our commutes in the same way we did last year, but we remain accessible to riders who continue their daily trips as well as to those who will rejoin us soon.

I plan to visit each station over the course of the next several weeks and I, along with other VRE staff, will be at the Broad Run Station tomorrow morning. We’ll of course be social distancing and wearing our face coverings, but we will be available to discuss anything you have on your mind.

If you’re not able to chat with us tomorrow, an easy option for you as a rider to connect with VRE is through our monthly Online Forum or gotrains@vre.org. VRE staff, myself and representatives from our partners at Keolis, CSX, and Amtrak personally review each question and answer as many as we can during each online event. It is a great platform for you to ask questions and provide feedback. The next Online Forum is scheduled Wednesday, October 7th at noon. Please follow Train Talk alerts for details leading up to the event.

Naturally the big topic right now is the pandemic and we are working hard to communicate what we at VRE are doing to keep you safe. We’ve enhanced our cleaning procedures, implemented visual cues for social distancing, installed hand sanitizer at stations and onboard our railcars, and are emphasizing the requirement for face coverings at platforms and onboard VRE trains for the duration of the trip, per Executive Order 63. We’re seeing outstanding compliance with face coverings. You can watch a nice overview of our various measures in this 2-minute video.

If you’d like to learn more about our enhanced processes and procedures, we’d love to talk. We hope to see you at the Broad Run station or other VRE stations in the weeks to come, or answer your questions through the Online Forum or gotrains@vre.org. Naturally, if you have non-COVID related items to discuss, we welcome those topics as well.

Stay safe, stay healthy!

Best,

Rich Dalton, Chief Executive Officer

Review Ridership Trends to Select Your Train

To ensure social distancing, just 45 of the 130 seats on each railcar are currently available to riders. Decals clearly designate unavailable seats.

Use the capacity utilization information below to find which trains offer the greatest opportunities to distance.

Only the trains shown below are operating at this time. As of now, we can add many more passengers per train while still easily supporting social distancing. We will add cars to trains and/or run additional trains as riders begin to return.

Ridership information is current as of today.
