Metro passengers scramble for Plan B after East Falls Church derailment

The derailment of a six-car Metro train Friday morning caused a major disruption for passengers at the East Falls Church station.

More than 70 passengers were safely offloaded to the platform after an outbound Silver Line train derailed east of the station.

Here is the latest. Note that the sign in the picture of a "Safe Track Shuttle" bus was readily available. In essence this is a Safe Track suspension, albeit unplanned.

WMATA news release:

UPDATE: Orange and Silver line service changes to continue through end-of-day Sunday as derailment investigation, repairs continue

After a full assessment of the track and infrastructure following Friday’s train derailment Metro is advising customers that service will remain suspended between West Falls Church/McLean and Ballston through the end of the day Sunday to allow for a thorough investigation and allow for necessary repairs.

Normal service is expected to resume when Metrorail opens at 5 a.m. Monday morning.

Customers traveling to or from stations west of Ballston are encouraged to use alternate travel modes if possible. Metro will continue to provide free shuttle buses between Ballston, East Falls Church, West Falls Church and McLean stations until rail service is restored.

Orange Line trains are operating in two segments: between Vienna and West Falls Church, and between Ballston and New Carrollton. Silver Line trains are operating between Wiehle-Reston East and McLean, and between Ballston and Largo Town Center.

The derailment occurred at 6:15 a.m. Friday. Two cars of a westbound Silver Line train derailed as the train was passing through a track crossing on approach to East Falls Church Station.

Late Friday night workers used specialized equipment, including cranes and re-railing machines, to safely remove the derailed cars from the scene. Once the cars were removed, it was determined that the derailment caused a portion of track to shift, resulting in damage to the interlocking tracks and related infrastructure.

Work will continue around the clock through the weekend to repair the damage including:

  • Replacing about 200 feet of running rail
  • Rebuilding 150 feet of electrified third rail
  • Replacement of two track crossings at the interlocking
  • Removal and replacement of approximately 200 wooden cross ties that hold the rail in place

Once repairs are completed, the area will undergo a comprehensive inspection utilizing track geometry equipment, as well as a quality assurance inspection. Metro will then run several "test trains" over the track prior to restoring passenger service.

Metro will continue to provide updates directly to customers via MetroAlerts email and text messages, as well as on Twitter @metrorailinfo. To sign up for MetroAlerts, visit wmata.com/metroalerts.

News release issued at 1:02 pm, July 30, 2016.

The Hill, 8/1/16:

DC Metro derailment likely caused by poor track condition

Last week’s train derailment on Washington’s Metrorail was likely caused by deteriorated rail ties on the tracks, the transit agency said Monday.

A preliminary investigation found that the rails were too far apart because of deteriorated wooden ties, leading to the derailment near the East Falls Church station on Friday.

Bad ties look to be the cause of WMATA derailment

A preliminary investigation by Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) into a derailment on Friday, July 29, found deteriorated crossties to be a factor.

NTSB news release:

NTSB Briefs Findings from Limited Investigation of WMATA Derailment

Aug. 3, 2016

WASHINGTON — The National Transportation Safety Board presented to Congressional staff for members of Congress from the region, as well as committee staff with oversight for transportation safety, the agency’s findings from a limited investigation of the July 29, 2016, derailment of a Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority train.

The NTSB dispatched two investigators to the scene of the Orange Line train 602 derailment near East Falls Church, Virginia, to assess the accident and to determine if a broader investigation was necessary.

The train derailed at an interlocking about 50 feet from the East Falls Church station platform. Approximately 75 passengers were evacuated to the wayside and onto the station platform. The trailing truck of the 4th rail car and the leading truck from the 5th rail car derailed. There were three reported injuries; one resulted in the passenger being transported to and subsequently released by, Arlington hospital. The other two passengers were evaluated and refused further medical attention. Service was suspended on the track after the derailment and resumed on Monday.

In this limited investigation the NTSB did not state probable cause, but did convey findings of fact, including:
• NTSB investigators noted a 59 inch gage (the distance between the rails of the track) in the location of the derailment. WMATA standards require that track gage greater than 57-1/4 inches be removed from service.
• Investigators noted a severe defective tie condition in the accident area. WMATA standards call for 12 non-defective crossties in this area. Further WMATA standards require no more than 10 feet between non-defective ties. In the subject location investigators found more than 30 feet of track with no effective crossties.

In response to the findings of the NTSB investigators and WMATA’s own investigation, the transit agency told the NTSB it is taking the following actions:
• Conduct a Stand Down Wednesday, to clarify the expectations for remedial actions following track inspections.
• WMATA supervisors will accompany track inspectors during crossover inspections in advance of safe tracks.
• Crossovers will now be included in main line track automated inspections.
• Crossovers will now be inspected twice weekly as required by WMATA standards.

The NTSB’s briefing to Congressional staff for Members of Congress from the region as well as committee staff with oversight for transportation safety, is the agency’s last update on its investigation of the derailment.
