WMATA news release 11/8/17:

Metro seeks public input on changes to improve access to the MTA's Purple Line project

At the request of the State of Maryland, Metro is considering changes at three of its transit facilities to improve customer access to the Maryland Transit Administration's (MTA) Purple Line facilities. The proposed changes would occur at Bethesda, Silver Spring and New Carrollton Metrorail stations.

Bethesda Metrorail Station

  • Construction of a new south entrance that will connect with the street level and the Bethesda Purple Line station.

Silver Spring Metrorail Station

  • Construction of a new entrance from the south end of the station platform to connect with the upper level of the existing Silver Spring Transit Center and the Silver Spring Purple Line station.

New Carrollton Metrorail Station

  • Removal of 500-600 parking spaces from the Park & Ride Surface Lot 4 on the station's north side to make way for the New Carrollton Purple Line station facilities.
  • Transfer of 480 parking spaces to WMATA from the State of Maryland. This state-owned Park & Ride Lot is on the south side of New Carrollton Metrorail station.

Customers are encouraged to provide input on the proposed changes to transit facilities. Comments will be provided to the Metro Board of Directors for final review and approval in early 2018. If approved, all changes would be funded by the State of Maryland.

Customer feedback may be provided through 5 p.m. on Friday, December 15:

  • Complete an online survey.
  • Attend an open house Tuesday, December 5, 2017, beginning at 5:30 p.m. followed by a public hearing at 6 p.m. Speakers are requested to register in advance via email at speak@wmata.com.

Has it been determined yet whether the Purple Line LRT will have its fares integrated with those of heavy rail Metro?  I know they are two different operators, but how they will collect fares on the Purple Line would determine how the stations should be built.  Generally around the country light rail lines operate under proof of payment honor systems, while Metro is a closed system with entrance and exit faregates.  However Los Angeles and Seattle have been moving to the TAP on - TAP off procedure for their LRT lines, and in L.A.'s  case, the heavy rail line is under the same system.  What I believe is user unfriendly is the need to tap off and tap on again when transferring to another line, especially for travelers whose connections are tight.

Back to Washington, the SmarTrip card is already universally accepted in tandem with Baltimore MTA's system (Charm Card), so presumably it could be used for the MTA Purple Line too.   But again one would have to exit the Metro with their SmarTrip card and then re-enter whatever MTA uses (assuming a closed system separate from the Metro) with the same card.
