Vermonter Reroute

Amtrak has started operating on the new Vermonter route between Springfield MA and Brattleboro VT.  With that change comes a change in the mileage.  All Vermonter trips posted will now reflect the new route. Mileage for prior trips will not change.

The new Vermonter timetable carries forward several mileage errors from the prior timetables. The errors are for stations between Springfield and Washington.  Normally, I use whatever mileage Amtrak publishes, right or wrong. However, doing that with the Vermonter would result in trips between the same stations varying by several miles between the Vermonter and all other services on the same route (Connecticut Shuttles, the Northeast Regionals and Acela). In order to eliminate that problem, I will continue to use a hybrid mileage table for Vermonter trips.

The table below shows the mileage built into the OTOL database and that shown on the Amtrak Vermonter timetable. For north of Springfield, the Vermonter timetable is the basis for the OTOL mileage. For south of Springfield, the Northeast mileage from the Amtrak System timetable is the basis.

Don't forget Holyoke.  While the Vermonter won't stop there for a few more months, it could be put in the database as Amtrak's new Vermonter schedule does show the mileage. Obviously nobody would be able to report Holyoke as part of a mileage station pair if they cannot yet possibly board or detrain there.

Good idea.  Right now, I've entered it using a placeholder code - ZZH. Once Amtrak reveals the actual code, I'll update the record.

San Francisco SFC Bus Stop Relocated

Effective today (3/1/14), the San Francisco Ferry Building bus stop is relocated to the temporary Transbay Terminal.  The stop will retain Amtrak station code SFC.  The timetable mileages for the various bus services serving SFC remain the same.

All previously submitted trips, and any future submissions arriving SFC on or before 2/28/15, will be remain as "San Francisco (Ferry Bldg.), CA."  Starting with arrivals today, SFC will be shown as "San Francisco (Transbay), CA."

An adjustment has been made to the New York Penn to Poughkeepsie mileage to provide a common mileage for all the Amtrak the services that call there. The NYP-POU mileage has been set at 73. This is the same as shown on the Lake Shore and Ethan Allen timetables, is one more mile than shown on the Adirondack timetable (shows 72), and is one less mile than shown on the Empire Service timetable for eastbound trips(shows 74), but is the same as shown for Empire Service for westbound trips.

This mileage change will cascade back through the database and may result in one mile adjustments, up or down, in prior trips to or from POU since 2008.

Roanoke VA has been added to the station mileage table of the database. Since Amtrak has not posted an official mileage, I plotted the route on TopoNA. The rail distance between the Lynchburg and Roanoke Amtrak stations plotted at 51 miles. That mileage will be reflected in the mileage calculation with trips taken to or from Roanoke. In the event Amtrak adds an official mileage different than 51 miles, the database entry will be changed and all prior Roanoke trips will adjust accordingly.

Some database statistics:

  • Stations entries: 961
  • Station mileages entries : 1025
  • Train or bus number entries: 829
  • Participant segments entered 2008 to date: 10,567
  • Total mileage 2008 to date: 2,332,534

Bill,

FWIW,   I am not sure what source the Roanoke Times used, but their story today (Monday) about the arrival of the inaugural run says 53 miles:

The $105 million project, which is based on a 30-year agreement with Norfolk Southern Corp., resumes passenger service after a 38-year hiatus. The closest that Amtrak has come to Roanoke has been Lynchburg, 53 railroad miles to the east.

Ah, a "semi-official" mileage. Change made.
