The City of Dallas and Dallas Area Rapid Transit (DART) exercised an option for the delivery of two additional off-wire capable Liberty Modern Streetcars – extending a partnership with Brookville Equipment Corp. that began with a March 2013 contract for two identical vehicles, delivered in the first half of 2015.

With the two delivered Liberty Modern Streetcars currently providing service along a 1.6-mile starter line between Dallas’ downtown Union Station and the Oak Cliff neighborhood, the additional two streetcars – both options exercised on the original contract – will upgrade the Dallas fleet to a total of four vehicles and add capacity for the forthcoming expansion to Oak Cliff’s Bishop Arts District, which is currently under construction.

“The Brookville team is eager to continue to work in conjunction with the City of Dallas and DART with the delivery of two additional Liberty Modern Streetcars,” said Brookville president Marion Van Fosson. “This partnership is a shining example of how American manufacturers can collaborate with American cities and public entities to provide sustainable jobs across the country while spurring domestic innovation.”

The two Dallas streetcars, which will be identical in size and feature the same service proven systems as the initial vehicles, are scheduled to start delivering Summer 2016.

“The customer and community response to the streetcar has been great,” said DART president/executive director Gary Thomas. “We are looking forward to extending it and working with Brookville to help our communities grow with great transit choices.”

In June 2015, the company also secured an order for six Liberty Modern Streetcars for the forthcoming M-1 RAIL streetcar line along Woodward Avenue in Detroit. That order will begin delivering in the fourth quarter of 2016 with the otherwise identical vehicles featuring an 8-foot 8-inch-wide carbody, compared to an 8-foot-wide carbody for the Dallas Liberty Modern Streetcars.

Dallas Launches Innovative Streetcar

The city of Dallas, Texas, is now the first city in the US to possess a hybrid-electric streetcar that can run without an overhead wire-connection — in this case, the streetcar in question makes use of a new “wireless” battery-powered design.

Brookeville Equipment Co. news release:

BROOKVILLE Ships Third Off-Wire Capable Liberty Streetcar to City of Dallas, Dallas Area Rapid Transit

6/29/2016

BROOKVILLE, Pa. – Brookville Equipment Corporation (BROOKVILLE) shipped its third of four American-manufactured Liberty Streetcars on order to the City of Dallas and Dallas Area Rapid Transit (DART) this week, marking the completion of the first of two vehicles ordered by DART in a contract option exercised in July of 2015. BROOKVILLE is delivering the first vehicle within 12 months of the exercised option’s Notice to Proceed and six months prior to contractual delivery. (Emphasis added)

The two option vehicles are identical to the first two Liberty Streetcars delivered to DART by BROOKVILLE in the spring of 2015. The Liberty Streetcars include an onboard energy storage system (OESS) for off-wire operation, an automatic leveling system for station-level boarding, and more than 70% low-floor area. The four-vehicle fleet will support the Dallas Streetcar line’s expansion into the Bishop Arts District, with service starting at two new stops in August 2016.

The Liberty Streetcar gained recognition in Dallas and around the world last year upon becoming the first off-wire capable streetcar to operate in the United States. In October 2015, the Liberty Streetcar with OESS was awarded the Light Rail Transit Association’s Global Light Rail Award for ‘Technical Innovation of the Year.’

The fourth Dallas-bound Liberty Streetcar is currently in the final stages of assembly at BROOKVILLE’s Pennsylvania manufacturing facility and slated to deliver later this summer.

BROOKVILLE is also currently under contract with Detroit-based M-1 RAIL, the City of Oklahoma City, and the City of Milwaukee for the production of six, six, and five Liberty Streetcar vehicles, respectively.
