Rail trip from Kingston shows MBTA’s ‘scheduling anomalies’

Bill Gregoire grabbed the train schedule from his wife when he noticed a familiar body of water emerging outside the window of his commuter rail train to Boston.

“Where’s this going now? To the Plymouth stop?” he asked, searching through the timetable. “That’s ridiculous. That can’t be right.”

I happen to be in Boston right now, and sigh... it's a slow news day here.  That operating model, serving both branches of the Kingston/Plymouth Lines, has been going on for several years.  We in fact did just that, an outbound ride to Kingston, the zigzag maneuver to get to Plymouth, and the inbound ride back to Boston, on the last Fest we had in the area in early 2013.

It is economical with push-pull equipment, and it does save the railroad from operating two near-empty trains on 2 different branches.  Of course the extra time involved causes them to operate ONE near-empty train.   Remember, under this operating model, an outbound passenger from Boston to Plymouth goes through the same thing ---- doglegging to Kingston first and then later to Plymouth.
