CTA Yellow Line service temporarily suspended

SKOKIE, Ill. (WLS) -- The CTA Yellow Line is shut down Monday morning because of damage to the tracks in north suburban Skokie.

Yellow Line trains suspended after embankment gives way under tracks

CTA officials say they aren't sure when they'll be able to run trains on the Yellow Line after an embankment gave way under a stretch of track.

"We're not sure what caused the soil to collapse underneath," said CTA spokeswoman Tammy Chase.  She said officials were trying to determine "how we can shore up the embankment and make the track safe."

The embankment, which carries trains along McCormick Boulevard between Howard and Oakton streeets, became unstable during a construction project not controlled by the CTA, Chase said.

Yellow Line to Skokie out of service indefinitely

The Yellow Line closed indefinitely late Sunday night after it was discovered that an embankment gave way under a stretch of the track due to a construction project.

CTA officials say they aren't sure when they'll be able to run trains on the line that connects the north suburb of Skokie to the city.

SNIP

An embankment that carries trains along McCormick Boulevard between Howard and Oakton Streets became unstable during the construction of a Metropolitan Water Reclamation District project, Chase said.

The earth moved on the CTA viaduct across McCormick Boulevard during the construction of the disinfection project at the O'Brien water reclamation plant, according to Allison Fore, a spokesperson with the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District construction project.

Service on the Yellow Line has been temporarily suspended due to a track condition.

Shuttle buses are available to provide connecting service through the affected area. Also, consider using the #97 Skokie bus as an alternative to Yellow Line service.

We are working to restore service as soon as possible. We apologize for the inconvenience and appreciate your understanding.

Allow extra travel time.

Temporarily suspended has turned into indefinitely, which has now turned into the next several days. Latest from Chicago, IL Tribune, 5/18/15:

Yellow Line to Skokie out of service for next several days, CTA says

The Yellow Line will remain closed for at least the next several days after an embankment gave way late Sunday, shuttering the line that connects Chicago to Skokie, CTA officials said Monday afternoon.

More here.  And that does NOT look good.  The track is in midair with nothing underneath supporting it.

WBBM (CBS) Chicago, 5/19:

Emails Indicate Construction Mishap May Have Caused Yellow Line Collapse

CHICAGO (CBS) – Yellow Line riders are in for a long delay, as it could up to a month before trains are running again, after tracks were damaged by a ground collapse.

Right now, the top priority is to stabilize the earth below the railway.

Until then, no CTA trains will run on the tracks, and officials are trying to get to the bottom of how it happened.

SNIP

And while crews work to make repairs, details of what caused the cave-in begin to surface.

CBS2 has learned that around 9:20 p.m. Sunday, a CTA train operator traveling southbound to Howard Street was the first to call and report “a small bend in the rail.”

Chicago Tribune, posted 5/22:

CTA Yellow Line to remain closed several more weeks

CTA Yellow Line riders will have to wait at least several more weeks before service can be restored after an embankment collapse, causing frustration over longer commute times.

For Manar Elkheir, of Skokie, that inconvenience means as much as an hour tacked on to her work-to-school commute.

"It's ruined my life," she said.

Elkheir, 20, said she typically takes the Yellow Line after a morning shift at the Starbucks across the street from the Dempster stop, then transfers to the Red Line to get to her classes at DePaul University.

Full Description:

Service on the Yellow Line has been temporarily suspended due to a track condition.

Shuttle buses are available to provide connecting service through the affected area. CTA #97 Skokie bus service may be a good alternative option to Yellow Line train service.

We are working to restore service as soon as possible. We apologize for the inconvenience and appreciate your understanding.

Allow extra travel time.

Shuttle bus service

Shuttle bus service operates on approximately the same frequency as scheduled Yellow Line service during hours which Yellow Line trains would otherwise operate—approximately every 10 minutes during weekday rush periods and every 15 minutes at most other times, in both directions.

As an added convenience, like Yellow Line service after Cubs night games, shuttle bus service hours will be extended following Cubs night games, with buses operating from Howard until Midnight.

Where to board bus shuttles Howard Toward Skokie: In bus terminal (use Paulina exit if transferring from Red or Purple Line trains in station). Oakton-Skokie Toward Dempster-Skokie: At regular northbound 54A stop on Skokie Blvd., just north of Oakton St. Toward Howard: At regular southbound 54A stop on the west side of Skokie Blvd, south of Searle Pkwy or on the west side of Skokie Blvd, north of Oakton St. Dempster-Skokie Toward Howard: In bus terminal near station.
