Story is here. I'm glad they are already planning Phase II while Phase I is nearing completion. It won't have any impact on the first segment, but it would be nice to know where the next segment will go. If the need is there, why not build a multi-branch system? There is a train wreck — make that a streetcar wreck — shaping up at Salt Lake City Hall.
Where will the Sugar House Streetcar line end? And just as important, who gets to make that decision?

Sugar House transportation plan calls for fewer cars, more bikes and pedestrians
The circulation plan also would establish the route of an extension to the Sugar House Streetcar line that soon will ply rails at about 2250 South from the Central Pointe TRAX station at 200 West to McClelland Street (1050 East).

North or East? Sugar House Streetcar looking for direction
Officials say it’s a certainty that the soon-to-open Sugar House Streetcar line will eventually continue from its McClelland Avenue terminus to Highland Drive (1100 East) and then north two blocks to 2100 South. The question is: then where?

Best route for streetcar 2100 South
We broke ground one year ago to construct the first phase of a modern streetcar that will connect the Sugar House business district with the main TRAX line at 2100 South. This first phase of the streetcar line will open later this year.

Cramped Sugar House
With all due respect to Salt Lake City Mayor Ralph Becker and the members of the City Council who have weighed the pros and cons of a plan for a trolley through Sugar House north via 1100 East or east via 2100 South, I am not convinced that the benefits will outweigh the inconveniences to existing businesses (particularly along narrow 1100 East).

Letter: Streetcar route
Several times a week I travel the 1100 East area of Sugarhouse. The area from 2100 South to 1700 South, the very area designated for the streetcar expansion, is one of the busiest, most congested streets in the city.

Streetcar on 1100 East — Not so fast
The Sugar House Streetcar is set to debut Dec. 8 — from the TRAX line at 200 West and 2100 South to McClelland Avenue in Sugar House — but the plan to extend the line north on 1100 East is anything but certain.
