Egypt to build 543km Suez – Mediterranean line
An Egyptian/Chinese consortium has reportedly won a $US 9bn contract to construct a 543km, 250km/h railway from Ain Sokhna on the Gulf of Suez coast to the new Administrative Capital east of Cairo and El-Alamein on Egypt’s Mediterranean coast. The line will also pass through the cities of Sixth of October, Alexandria, and Burj al-Arab.
The winning consortia, led by China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC) and Samcrete, includes the Arab Organisation for Industrialisation and China Railway Construction Corporation (CRCC).
