Triangle Transit Authority

HILLSBOROUGH, N.C. — GoTriangle officials said updated bus and light-rail investment plans should be available for Durham and Orange counties to review and approve before the Federal Transit Administration’s April 30 deadline, The News&Observer reports.

The boards of commissioners in each county also will vote in late April on updated agreements for implementing their respective plans and for sharing the local costs of a $2.5 billion Durham-Orange Light-Rail Transit system. The 17.7-mile light-rail line would run from UNC Hospitals to N.C. Central University.

The FTA told GoTriangle in a recent email that the counties must be committed to paying at least 30% of the project’s local cost, or $371.1 million, before the project can be approved for engineering work. GoTriangle’s Board of Trustees could approve a $70 million engineering contract once the FTA signs off. For the full story, click here.

Column in Raleigh, NC News & Observer, 4/14/17:

Can Orange County afford light rail?

Last December, when GoTriangle wanted more money for the Durham-Orange Light Rail Transit (DOLRT) project, the Orange County commissioners hired Davenport & Co. to review the entire financial plan. Davenport’s work revealed new costs and unexpected risks for our transit future.

Opinion in Durham, NC Herald-Sun, 4/14/17:

Rethink Durham-Orange light rail

From the mid-1990s, many of the consultants hired by Durham government have advised that our 18-mile light rail will not work. Only 3 percent of our population is predicted to want to use the rail, now projected at over $2 billion. Plus, Durham government will need millions to join the smarter, Wake County/Durham commuter train from Raleigh/Garner/ RTP/Durham.

Counties reach decision point on Durham-Orange Light-Rail Project

Orange and Durham county leaders will decide this month whether to advance the $3.3 billion Durham-Orange Light Rail Transit project and how to split the local cost.

If, as one woman mentioned, the line does not have an airport connection, that is a serious deficiency......especially considering there is a $3.3 billion price tag.

Durham County Commissioners approve revised Durham-Orange Light Rail Transit cost-sharing agreement

DURHAM

The Durham County Board of Commissioners voted on Monday to approve a revised plan for the Durham-Orange Light Rail Transit project that would shrink both Durham and Orange counties share of the $3.3 billion project and push it one step closer to reality.
