LIRR news release, 10/13/17:

Integral East Side Access Work at Harold Interlocking This Fall
LIRR Weekend Schedule Changes in Effect Oct. 14-15; Nov. 4-5 and Nov. 11-12

This weekend, the Long Island Rail Road will perform testing of a new signal system on existing, live tracks at Harold Interlocking in Queens – a pivotal step in the progress toward East Side Access, a project that will allow thousands of commuters to shorten their trips to and from Manhattan with a travel option to Grand Central Terminal at Park Avenue, instead of Penn Station, on the west side.

This work is scheduled to coincide with other train schedule changes due to concrete tie work on the Babylon Branch, and therefore, reduce overall train service impacts.

The signal testing will continue on Nov. 4-5 and Nov. 11-12, prompting changes to the following branches all three weekends:

Port Jefferson Branch

  • Weekend service between Penn Station and Huntington will be reduced from half-hourly to hourly.
  • Weekend service between Huntington and Port Jefferson will be reduced from every 60-90 minutes to every 2 hours.
  • Two Friday night westbound trains (the 9:51 p.m. train from Hicksville to Penn Station, and the 9:29 p.m. train from Huntington to Penn Station) will operate on adjusted schedules between Jamaica and Penn Station.

Ronkonkoma Branch

  • Some eastbound trains from Penn Station to Ronkonkoma depart earlier than usual on these weekends.
  • On Friday nights, one westbound train – the 9:11 p.m. from Ronkonkoma – will stop at Woodside 4 minutes later than usual, and will arrive at Penn Station 6 minutes later than usual.

Far Rockaway Branch

  • Many Penn Station, Woodside, Forest Hills, and Kew Gardens connections for Far Rockaway Branch trains will be affected on these weekends, including some eastbound connections from Penn Station that will depart earlier than normal.

City Terminal Zone

  • Service between Penn Station and Jamaica will be affected these weekends, with many eastbound and westbound trains operating on adjusted schedules.

Babylon Branch

*Note: Information on this concrete tie work was issued in a press release on Sept. 22. It is included in this press release to remind customers that this work is still ongoing, and that some additional trains have been affected.

On the Babylon Branch, LIRR crews are replacing wood ties with concrete ties between Freeport and Merrick. The work is being done under the LIRR’s 2017 Annual Track Program, an ongoing initiative designed to enhance future service, improve infrastructure, ensure safety and increase on-time performance.

During the weekends of Oct. 14-15, Nov. 4-5 and Nov. 11-12, one of two main tracks will be out of service between Rockville Centre and Wantagh. Trains on the Babylon Branch will continue to operate in both directions, but will run on an hourly basis, reduced from every half hour, with stopping patterns revised on remaining trains.

  • Weekend service will be reduced from half-hourly to hourly at most Babylon Branch Stations.
  • Some Friday night trains will run on adjusted schedules on Oct. 13, Nov. 3 and Nov. 10. For eastbound customers: the 11:22 p.m. train from Penn Station -- will leave 2 minutes later and will have adjusted stopping times to Jamaica. For westbound customers: the 11:26 p.m. train from Babylon will arrive at Woodside 1 minute later and Penn Station 2 minutes later.
  • One morning train will operate on an adjusted schedule on Mondays Oct. 16, Nov. 6 and 13: the 2 a.m. westbound train from Babylon will arrive at Woodside 2 minutes later than usual – instead of 3:05 a.m. and 3:16 a.m., the train will stop at 3:07 a.m. and 3:18 a.m., respectively.

Other Changes

Other changes on these weekends include some eastbound trains on the Huntington Branch that will stop at Forest Hills and Kew Gardens. Some Patchogue, Speonk and Montauk Branch trains will be running on adjusted schedules and have alternate connections at Jamaica or Babylon. Some eastbound Oyster Bay connections from Penn Station, Kew Gardens and Forest Hills will also change; trains will depart three minutes earlier at Penn Station and five minutes earlier at Kew Gardens and Forest Hills.

Customers should refer to special timetables posted on the MTA website for specific train times.

LIRR news release 2/20/18:

Service Advisory: Timetable and Service Changes Weekend of February 24-25

Long Island Rail Road crews will perform testing on a new signal system this coming weekend, February 24-25, at Harold Interlocking, an important step that bolsters progress on the East Side Access project. The newly installed signal system, when it is put into use this spring, will ensure smooth and improved train service through this integral interlocking, containing numerous switches that route trains to a different number of tracks.

The new system includes improved microprocessor technology that is faster, has more built-in redundancies, and is more reliable than the older hard-wired, relay-based signal system.

To allow for this work, from about 10 p.m. on Friday night, February 23, until 5 a.m. on Monday, February 26, some LIRR train departure times may be altered, and train service on some branches will be adjusted. The LIRR urges customers to view special timetables found here, for a complete listing of train schedules for this weekend.

Service Changes Saturday and Sunday, February 24-25:

Port Jefferson Branch

• Service is reduced from half-hourly to hourly, with trains making all local stops from Huntington through New Hyde Park.

• Service east of Huntington is reduced from 90-minute intervals to 2-hour intervals, with alternate connections west of Huntington.

Ronkonkoma, Babylon, Montauk, and Far Rockaway Branches

• Some trains will operate on adjusted schedules.

Far Rockaway Branch

• Customers boarding at Penn Station should board Ronkonkoma trains 3 minutes earlier than normal.
