MTA website:

MTA is the Best Way to Super Bowl XLVIII

January 17th, 2014

When Super Bowl XLVIII comes to the New York region on Sunday, February 2 – and during the week of events leading up to the big game – the Metropolitan Transportation Authority’s network of subways, railroads and buses is the best way to get to and from all game-related events. To make it easier to get around, the MTA will add service at selected times, will suspend most track and road work, and is providing visitors with special maps, station way finding and extra personnel who will make it easier to navigate connections between transit services in New York and New Jersey.

Wednesday, January 29, to Friday, January 31

The Super Bowl Host Committee is hosting Super Bowl Boulevard (Engineered by GMC), which will feature many fan interactive experiences that will excite any football fan and will take over Broadway from 34th Street to 47th Street from noon to 10 p.m. starting Wednesday, Jan. 29. The BLVD features a 7-story Toboggan Run that will be fun for the whole family.

Super Bowl Boulevard is located at the hub of one of the world’s largest subway systems and just a football throw away from Penn Station and Grand Central. New York City Transit is providing full service on 15 subway lines that stop underneath the boulevard or within one block of it. Catch the B D F M N Q R to 34th Street-Herald Square, N Q R S 1 2 3 7 to Times Square-42nd Street, or A C E to 42nd Street-Port Authority Bus Terminal.

To help fans from around the region get to and from Super Bowl Boulevard and other Super Bowl-related events, the Long Island Rail Road and Metro-North Railroad will augment off-peak service to and from Manhattan.

Long Island Rail Road

The LIRR is adding extra late afternoon and evening trains on four branches, starting Jan. 29th to help football fans who want to be part of Super Bowl excitement in NYC:

· Babylon Branch: Four extra Penn Station-bound trains will depart Babylon between 3:50 p.m. and 5:29 p.m. and will make all local stops.

· Ronkonkoma Branch: An extra Penn Station-bound train will depart from Ronkonkoma at 3:59 p.m. making all local stops. Three Ronkonkoma-bound trains will depart Penn Station between 8:51 p.m. and 11:32 p.m.

· Port Jefferson Branch: Three extra Penn Station-bound trains will depart Huntington between 4:01 p.m. and 4:52 p.m. An extra Huntington-bound train will depart Penn Station at 10:45 p.m.

· Port Washington Branch: Three extra Penn Station-bound trains will depart Great Neck between 4:25 p.m. and 6:04 p.m.

For more details, please see the attached LIRR Super Bowl BLVD Activity Guide, available online at mta.info by clicking here or at major LIRR stations and terminals.

Metro-North Railroad

From Wednesday, January 29, through Friday, January 31, Metro-North will run four extra trains per day, as follows:

· Harlem Line: An extra train will depart Southeast at 10:08 a.m., arriving at Grand Central at 11:31 a.m.

· Hudson Line: An extra train will depart Poughkeepsie at 9:47 a.m., arriving at Grand Central at 11:25 a.m.

· New Haven Line: An extra train will departs New Haven at 9:21 a.m., arriving at Grand Central at 10:59 a.m. Also, an extra train will depart Grand Central at 11:11 p.m., arriving in New Haven at 12:56 a.m.

Saturday, February 1

With Super Bowl Boulevard continuing, New York City Transit will run extra trains on the 1 line and on the S 42nd Street Shuttle will have a rush-hour level of service with three trains running, and will closely monitor conditions in the subway system to deploy extra trains if needed.

Metro-North will augment its service further by running all of the trains marked as “Shoppers Specials” on the New Haven Line and the Hudson Line. That means 16 extra trains on the New Haven Line and two extra trains on the Hudson Line. All the trains are indicated in timetables available online and at stations.

The LIRR will run six extra Babylon Branch trains as noted in the brochure on Saturday, Feb. 1, and Sunday, Feb. 2.

Super Bowl Sunday, February 2

Fans holding tickets to Super Bowl XLVIII will be able to take trains, Fan Express buses, and charter buses to the country’s first Mass Transit Super Bowl. Fans traveling to the Super Bowl on Sunday, Feb. 2, will be required show their game ticket at Secaucus Junction before being allowed to connect to the MetLife Stadium shuttle train.

From Penn Station, Super Bowl ticket holders can catch NJ Transit trains or select Amtrak trains to Secaucus, N.J., for a short shuttle train ride to MetLife Stadium.

As with all events that feature train service to MetLife Stadium, the Long Island Rail Road and Metro-North Railroad offer one-ticket rides to the game. If buying a ticket at a ticket vending machine, select “M,” then “Meadowlands” as your destination. You’ll receive one ticket that is valid on all the trains you’ll ride to get to the stadium for trains operated by the LIRR, Metro-North or NJ Transit.

By subway, Penn Station is directly accessible via the 1 2 3 A C E lines. It is one block away from the D F N Q R at 34th Street-Herald Square. (The B which also stops at Herald Square on weekdays, does not run on Sundays and similarly the M does not run in Manhattan on Sundays.)

These local buses serve Penn Station: M4, M7, M20, M34, M34A, and the Q32. (Click on the links to be taken to the real-time locations of buses on given routes.)

In addition, Fan Express buses will depart for the game from six points in Manhattan, and the MTA is a great way to get to all the departure points.

· Battery Place (4 5 to Bowling Green)

· 6th Ave (A C D F to W. 4th St)

· Madison Square Park (N R to 23rd St)

· Grand Central/45th St (4 5 6 7 S/Metro-North to Grand Central)

· Waldorf Astoria Hotel (6 to 51st St/E to Lexington Ave)

· Time-Warner Center (1 A C D) to 59th St-Columbus Circle)

After the game is over, the LIRR is running two extra trains from Penn Station. A Babylon-bound train will depart at 1:13 a.m. and a Huntington-bound train will depart at 2:44 a.m.

MTA to Suspend Track and Road Work

MTA New York City Transit is suspending Manhattan weekend track work during Super Bowl weekend, Feb. 1-2, with the exception of the long-term Sandy recovery project to restore the R train through the Montague Tube. MTA Bridges and Tunnels will closely monitor all routine construction at its crossings Super Bowl week, particularly at the bridges and tunnels leading into Manhattan. All routine construction will be suspended at MTA crossings on Super Bowl weekend. The Bronx-Whitestone Bridge will maintain three lanes heading to the Bronx all weekend.

An Information Campaign to Help for Visitors

The MTA wants visitors from out of town to be able to navigate the country’s largest mass transit system as easily as possible. The agency has worked with all major transit providers in the region to produce the first-ever regional transit diagram, which shows easy connections to Super Bowl events on both sides of the Hudson River. It is being distributed to all Super Bowl ticket holders, and is available online here:

At Penn Station, the LIRR has added special signage and extra personnel who will help direct fans to Super Bowl Boulevard through Feb. 1 and to connecting trains for service to the Super Bowl on Feb. 2.

To boost awareness of the Train to the Game, the MTA has produced a million NFL-designed commemorative MetroCards. Four designs are being distributed via MetroCard Vending Machines and at selected station booths.
