From Columbus, OH Dispatch, 6/6/06:

COTA to slam brakes on transit options

COTA might abandon any attempt to add light rail, streetcars or bus rapid transit.

The Central Ohio Transit Authority has been studying all three, but none qualifies for federal funding right now, officials said.

From Columbus Dispatch 2-24-14

Transportation Insider: Coleman can’t shake his taste for light rail

Mayor Michael B. Coleman has a fever, and the only cure appears to be light rail.

In his 15 years as the city’s longest-serving mayor, Coleman has mentioned passenger rail countless times. He brought it up again last week near the end of his State of the City address.

Coleman proposed a passenger rail line connecting Port Columbus and Downtown. He mentioned that there’s no direct transportation between the airport and Downtown outside of taxis.

“Can we connect our Downtown to our airport by passenger rail?” he said. “It’s not a question I am answering now.”

Dan Williamson, Coleman’s spokesman, said after the speech that the proposal was just an idea.

“The mayor has talked about light rail for years and will probably talk about it for years to come,” Williamson said.

The Central Ohio Transit Authority offered a direct bus line between the airport and Downtown but stopped it more than a decade ago because of low ridership.

Even though about 17,000 passengers were departing from and landing at the airport daily, fewer than 40 people were taking the Downtown bus, according to reports at the time.

COTA still offers bus service at the airport, but getting Downtown requires a transfer.

Commuter rail being considered to link Port Columbus to downtown

Will there be a day when travelers hop off flights at Port Columbus International Airport and catch a train headed downtown?
The idea is being considered, at least.

Maybe the loss of 2016 GOP convention to Cleveland due to lack of rail transit was a wake-up call to Columbus. Hmmmmm. B)

COTA Looking for Help in Picking Best Corridors for Light Rail or Streetcars

There is no shortage of opinions in Columbus about whether rail should be a part of our future transit network, and the Central Ohio Transit Authority, with it’s ongoing NextGen process, is very methodically working toward an official recommendation on that front. However, before any decisions are made about what type of “premium transit” is best for Columbus — light rail, streetcar, bus rapid transit, or something else — COTA wants to be sure that there is agreement about where it should go.

Columbus Streetcar Project Relaunched with Kickstarter Campaign

Columbus Mayor Andrew Ginther officially announced today that the long-dormant High Street Streetcar project is officially back on track. The project was shelved several years ago during the national recession when a plan to fund the project never materialized. Today, city and county officials are expected to gather at City Hall to announce an innovative new way to get the Streetcar operational without introducing new fees or taxes.

Grist, 7/21/16:

Columbus: “No light rail for us, please — just loads and loads of driverless cars”

Columbus, Ohio, is bucking trends when comes to mass transit — and not everyone is happy about it.

In June, the city won a $40 million Smart City grant from the Department of Transportation, beating out 71 other cities also vying for the money. But whereas most of the other cities proposed using the money for rail-based mass transit options like street cars, monorail, and light rail, Columbus plans to spend the money on a network of autonomous vehicles.

Smart City grant doesn’t include light rail option, Transit Columbus says it should

Columbus is a growing city. Estimates show the city could be adding a million more people by 2050.

The question is how do all those people get from point A to point B without adding more cars on the road?

There's CoGo, the bike sharing system to get you around downtown, and there's COTA if you like taking the bus.

But if you're dreaming about light rail to transport you from one end of downtown to other or beyond, keep dreaming.

Light rail from Franklinton to Columbus State? COTA considering 3 routes for rapid mass transit

Columbus’ bus system has identified three corridors it thinks are best suited for light rail or other forms of public rapid transit.

The Central Ohio Transit Authority said the corridors – along East Main Street, North High Street and from Franklinton to Columbus State Community College – are suitable for mass transit immediately, although that would require federal funding to provide service.

Many years later, some are still advocating for light rail in Columbus.  If Amtrak 3-C comes to fruition it could compliment it nicely as a distributor between the rail station and other points.  Editorial in Columbus, OH Dispatch, 8/22/21:

Our View: A cowtown no more, but what will Columbus become?

(snip)

There has long been a push for light rail and other improvements to public transportation, including a bus rapid transit line to link Downtown Columbus with the Northwest Side.
