KCS news release:

Increasing Network Fluidity

June 23, 2017

KCS places a high priority on our lines operating at optimal levels and we continue to invest in our network to ensure fluidity and capacity to meet the demands of our customers.

Accordingly, we are pleased to announce the completion of two new sidings on our network. Both sidings have been designed and located to provide maximum benefit to the fluidity and capacity of their respective routes.

The first siding is on the UP Brownsville subdivision near Placedo, TX, called “Benavides”. This is a critical location for KCS cross-border traffic and historically has been the bottleneck segment of that area. KCS has been working closely with the UP during recent years to identify projects to improve this key area. The Benavides siding will improve train meets and reduce delays to cross-border trains while providing additional capacity through this challenging segment. Work was completed in May 2017.

The second siding, “Quirio”, was put into service on June 16, 2017, on KCSM’s very busy Caltzontzin District. This strategically-placed siding will increase the capacity of this district significantly to accommodate current train traffic more efficiently and allow for future growth. This siding is located in the middle of the former bottleneck segment of the district providing optimal benefit. The analysis and design for this siding began in 2015 and construction started in August 2016.

You can find the siding locations on the map:
