Streetcar moves ahead after union request denied

Barring any surprises, the Cincinnati streetcar's latest drama-filled chapter is over.

SORTA taps Transdev for streetcar contract

The Southwest Ohio Regional Transit Authority (SORTA) yesterday approved a new streetcar services contract with Transdev Services.

The agreement covers an initial startup period, a five-year base contract and five optional one-year extensions.

Transdev is the new name for the old Veolia, which carried some negative stigma for its other operations.   Story is here.

Signed, sealed, delivered: Cincinnati Streetcar operations belong to Transdev CINCINNATI — After months of fierce debate, finger-wagging and even more fierce debate out of City Hall (not to mention an 11th-hour attempted roadblock by the transit union), the agreement between the transit authority and the streetcar’s operator was signed Tuesday.

From the FWIW Department, Pennsylvania Trolley Museum has preserved a vintage Cincinnati streetcar.  Note dual trolley poles which were a unique feature on Cincinnati trolleys for twin wire operation.  The local telephone company, fearful that using rails for ground return would affect call quality, insisted on that current collection technique.
